Rhiwbina v Deri Broncos

Div 5 SE League Fixture

Sat 03/03/07

Rhiwbina  were on the verge of a historical 17th consecutive League win at Caedelyn Park that would secure them the League title and promotion to Division 4. The tension was almost unbearable as the event was being covered by BBC Wales Scrum V cameras and Mr Roger Lewis Chief executive of the WRU would be at hand to present us with the trophy should we win. No one wanted to make any mistakes and the final team talk got the boys up for the game.

The game got off to a great start for the Squirrels  and a thumping tackle from Paul Cooper on his opposite centre set the tone of the match. Rhiwbina then got their moves working against a strong wind and good handling from the backs put Luke 'Bealey' Brazier in at the corner to open the scores.

This was soon followed by tries for Roy Pastacchio from a massive driving maul and with the Rhiwbina scrum giving the bigger Deri pack a torrid time in the set pieces further tries came from mistakes at the base of the  Bronco's scrum for Gerkyn and Hammy and Salty bagged the conversions.

Then came a gem of a try for First team debutante second row Rhys Roberts who rounded of a fantastic backs and forwards move initiated by centre Mark Lee with with a spectacular try under the posts-right in front of the cameras. Nice dive Rhys!

S

The Rhiwbina lineout was in good form all day with Spanish finding his jumpers with ease and the lineout drives made massive inroads into the Deri defence.

Rhiwbina got another gem of a try from our leading tryscorer Prop James Huntley who's cheeky dummy outfoxed the last line of defenders allowing him to crash over-right in front of the BBC Cameras as well!!

Deri battled bravely during this game and got on the scoreboard with a penalty.

In the second half and with the wind behind them Rhiwbina kept the pressure on and knew that the League Title was in their grasp. Deri never let their heads go down and kept battling to a man but the Squirrels were in control by this stage and got further tries for Roy and Huntley through powerful driving mauls.

A shortened lineout led to a great try for Captain Gavin Harris who crashed over to increase our lead before Salty rounded off a great afternoon with a try following great handling and offloading from the whole team.

Salty bagged 5 conversions in all and at the final whistle Rhiwbina had run out convincing winners 60-3.

That win secured Rhiwbina the Div 5 SE League title and promotion to Div 4 next season. It also sets a club record of 17 consecutive League wins and makes us one of only 2 teams who have won all their League games in Wales!

The victorious Squirrels were presented with the League Trophy by Mr Roger Lewis and this sparked the champagne celebrations that went on long into the night!

This was a day that the Club will always remember and shows that Rhiwbina have dug themselves out of the hole they were in a few years back and that the good times have returned.

The Brian ELLEND Man of the Match Award goes to the whole First Team Squad for their amazing achievements this season. Well done boys-brought a tear to our eyes!

Big thanks to everyone who helped out on the day including the Junior Section and others who ran the BBQ Stall and Drinks stall to everyone who prepared the pitches and to Nutter the Squirrel-well done Miss Brinkworth.

A big thanks also to our loyal supporters who were there in their hundreds yesterday to cheer us on!

ALL THREE TEAMS WON ON THE BEST DAY IN THE CLUBS HISTORY FOR THE LAST 15 YEARS!

There are some professional photographs of the whole day being prepared and I will produce a Web Page of them when I get them.

WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS!

COME ON THE SQUIRRELS!

Playing with the elements Rhiw only left the Old Pens half for restarts during the first 40 mins. One of the best performances of a great season, the support play, tackling and unselfish play along with the attacking game plan led to a final score of 64-0.To single out any one player would be unfair, all 19 played with skill and commitment.

the squirrels ventured the short distance to face our close rivals in the cup and came away with a noteable scalp-facing a big pack and well drilled backs we were under the cosh for the first 20 mins camped in our 22 defending staunchly-coming to half-time we nudged ahead 12-7 and then the 2nd half the mix of youth and experience really started to gel-an excellent win.the pack really upped themselves second half and mouse, meatyard and diamond tore into the oppossion.mom was the wily old fox tony bartlett who had a stormer.well done everybody-hopefully next season rhiwbina 3rds will be in cardiff and district league 4-which at the moment chsob 3rds are top of having only lost 1 game-so yesterday's win puts in perspective how well you did yesterday.
