Caedelyn Park

Rhiwbina welcomed our good friends Ferndale RFC to Caedelyn Park for the  ASDA Div 5 SE league fixture. In front of a good crowd on a warm late summer afternoon the match got off to a good start for the Squirrels who were too strong up front for the visitors and which set the platform for the backs to move it wide.

Two storming tries for James Huntley, and tries for scrum half Dan Salter, flanker Dan Hobbs , centre Mark Lee and hooker Roy Pesticcio with a number of conversions and penalties from outside half Richy Saltmarsh proved the downfall of the valleys side.

Outstanding performances from the whole team after the disappointment of the Usk game the previous week. Dave Brockway put in some magnificent last cover tackles and John Brinkworth and Huntley put in some bonecrunching  hits to hold out Ferndale. To be fair to the visitors they did give Rhiwbina some trouble in the second half with two great breakaway tries from their own 22 and never gave up but the game as a contest had slipped away by then.

Andrew Dugdale was very impressive with his lineout and kick off catches and had some great bursts with ball in hand. Rhiwbina are now proudly top of the League and hope to stay there in the coming weeks.

We could have had 3 or 4 more tries but for passes going astray and some valiant cover defence from the Ferndale lads.

All in all a satisfying result that leaves some interesting decisions for the Coaches as to selection for next weeks game against St Josephs.

Final score 46-17

'Come on the Squirrels!'
