Rhiwbina 2nds v Llanishen 2nds

East District 2nd Team Cup Ouarter Final

Caedelyn Park

Sat 31/03/07

Rhiwbina  2nds have had an incredible season led by Captain Dai Hobbs only losing one League game in the process. They are top of their respective League and look set for promotion with only 4 games left.  Todays game against Llanishen 2nds in the Quarter Final of the East District 2nd Team Cup was a huge game against a 2nd Team who's club are 2 leagues above us.

The game was very tight in the opening quarter with Rhiwbina playing into a very strong wind. Despite this the Rhiwbina 8 began to dominate in the scrum and lineout and soon got on the scorebord through two tries for No 8 Andy Rook and another for fellow back rower Dan Hobbs with Birdy bagging a conversion to take them 17-0 into the lead at half time.

A nasty knee injury saw Buffer Boughton who was having a great game up till that point replaced at full back by Virgil.

In the second half the Squirrels did not let up the pace. Birdy scored a wonder try with a length of the field break that left the defenders for dead to extend our lead.

Quick ball saw wingers Chrissy and Virgil get over the line for a try each on both sides of the park. Great interpassing between forwards and backs  with an outrageous one handed dummy pass from Payney put Andy in for his 3rd under the posts and further great support running also led to another for centre Geraint.

Llanishen never gave up in this game and caused us a few problems in the rucks but the continual pressure from driving mauls led to another try for flanker Pat who stormed over the line taking a number of defenders with him.

Birdy made the most of the wind with some massive touchfinders to keep Llanishen pegged near their own line also bagged a few conversions.

The Squirrels 2nds kept the visitors from scoring and the final score was somewhere in the region of 53-0.

A fantastic display of 15 man rugby from Rhiwbina that underlines the fantastic season they are having and a number of players put their hands up for selection for the First Team squads for the upcoming Silver ball and East District Semi Finals.

The Brian ELLEND Man of the Match must go to No 8 Andy Rook for his hat trick of tries and all round performance-well done Andy!

The 2nds go marching on to the Semi Finals of the 2nd Team Cup.

Quality lads!
