Div 5 SE League Fixture
Rhiwbina were today on the verge of Club history as they travelled across to Old Penarthians for a top v bottom encounter knowing that a win would give them an unprecedented 15 straight league wins and set a new club record for going unbeaten.
The Firsts had a large number of players unavailable through injury and other committments but so strong is the depth of the squad at present that we had able replacements to step up and cover the missing members.
On a sunny but cold and blowy day the Squirrels soon took charge of the game against an Old Pens side who have a huge pack and soon got the scoreboard ticking over with tries for Gerkin and Salty and a cracker for Silva on the wing. We were soon 17 -0 up and in total control.
Outstanding performances again from the whole team who carry the millstone of the side everyone wants to beat every week and have to rise to the challenge every weekend. Todays Brian ELLEND Men of the Match were Liam 'The Salmon' Neal and Mark 'Maldwyn' Lee who were just different class today and set the benchmark for everyone else on the park.
The scoreline was soon added to with John Brinkworth joining the forwards to take on a driving maul and screaming everyone out of the way as he crashed over for a try under the posts! Not to be outdone Vince 'The Dark' Knight crashed over for a wingers try after a superb backs move to take us into half time 31-0 in the lead.
The second half saw the Old Pens come out all guns blazing and put pressure on Rhiwbina in the scrum and ruck and maul but the Squirrels rode the storm and further tries came for leading try scorer prop James 'Hank' Huntley (12 tries in 15 games) and the first ever try in a Firsts League game for Huw 'Pumpkin' Neal who took a short crash ball from Spanish to score under the posts!!
By now the Squirrels were rampant and were running tries in from everywhere. Two more great long range efforts from Salty who's arcing runs split the home sides defence and took his match total to 27 points with a hat-trick of tries and 6 conversions and another from a 50 yard sprint for Gerkin who took a quick tap penalty on half way and left the defence for dead.
With a few minutes to go Rhiwbina tried to get another ambitious try when running out of defence but a stray pass from El Capitan Gavin found it's way to the Old Pens 2nd row who outsprinted the Squirrels defence to crash over for a well deserved consolation try that was converted by the trusty boot of the seasiders Outside Half Mr S. Hank.
Old Penarthians RFC 7-62 Rhiwbina RFC
10 tries in all to set us up for the League run in.
This was a record breaking performance for Rhiwbina who have now won 15 out of 15 league games and who are almost certain to win promotion as the top side in Div 5 SE with only 3 games left.
This is especially pleasing for the current players and committee and supporters who only a few seasons back were the whipping boys of the Leagues and who struggled to win only 1 fixture in over 2 years and were relegated from Div 3 to Div 5 in successive seasons!
The good times have returned for the Squirrels who also hope to make their mark in the East District and Silver Ball competitions.
A big thank you to everyone who travelled across to see the game.
The next game is at Caedelyn on Sat 17th Feb v Dinas Powys.
COME ON THE RECORD BREAKING SQUIRRELS!!!!
