Div 5 SE League Fixture
A pitch inspection at 10 am on Saturday morning and a break in the weather led to this game going ahead at our Whitchurch Hospital ground. This was the first encounter between these sides in many years and the first in a Div 5 League encounter and the players and supporters were looking forward to it.
Rhiwbina got out of the blocks early and put the Valleys team under pressure from the off. This led to our opponents giving away a number of penalties one of which outside half Richy Saltmarsh slotted over to opem the scores.
Another penalty five metres out was taken quickly by Salty who caught the visitors napping and crashed over to score the first try which he duly converted. Rhiwbina were 10-0 up and applying a lot of pressure in the scrums and winning a number against the head.
The backs were making in-roads with some storming breaks by centre Paul Cooper and wing Garth Adams. The game then went into a bii of a lull with the very heavy conditions slowing the game down and Penygraig got back into the game and put pressure on the Squirrels line but resolute defence held them out.
At the turnaround Rhiwbina led by 10-0 and were determined to hold onto their unbeaten league record. The Rhiwbina driving maul took them upfield on a number of occcasions and on one such powerful drive led to scrum half Gerwyn Neale diving over to get the second try.
There then came a period of intense pressure from Penygraig with them camped in our 22 for some time but massive tackles from the backs and some bonecrunchers from John Brinkworth held them at bay. We havent got one of the best defensive records in Wales for nothing!
Rhiwbina then forced themselves back up field to relieve the pressure and a loose kick from the visitors failed to find touch and was caught by flying wing Luke 'Bealey' Brazier who's jinking run cut the Penygraig backs open and scored almost under the posts-leaving an easy conversion for Salty. Bealey had a number of good runs all afternoon and bagged the Brian ELLEND 'Man of the Match' award.
Another great determined team display from the Squirrels on a heavy pitch against a physical and dogged Penygraig side who have been playing well of late and now extends our unbeaten record to 9 wins in 9 games and keeps us still on top of the league at the halfway point of the season.
Thanks to all our loyal fans and supporters who turned up to watch-the lads appreciate your support!
This win led to a great night at the Rhiwbina RFC XXXmas party with some storming karaoke from Alvin and some great performances from Eugene and Birdy-Quality.
Bealey may need a new camera!
