Rhiwbina v Pontyclun

At a wet and windy Caedelyn Rhiwbina RFC kicked off the 2006/07 season with two games-

The First XV played old friends Pontyclun and the Seconds XV played Llanishen 3rds in what turned out to be a great start for the Squirrels who won both games handsomely.

The Firsts won the toss and decided to play with the wind and after a tentative 5 minutes began to win all the breakdowns and piled immense pressure on a Pontyclun side that looked very different to the Two teams we played last year (and who beat us on both occasions.)

Rhiwbina's pack  and backs were too quick and strong for the opposition who conceded numerous penalties for infringements at the breakdown and had a number of sin binnings as their composure and discipline evaporated .

This took it's toll on Pontyclun who conceded 29 points in the first half without reply.

First half tries by Salty, Hobbsy, Liam and Hammy- 3 Cons, 1 pen (Salty)- Second half -'THAT' drop goal also from Salty. Rhiwbina

The expected fightback came from the opposion after the half time break but magnificent defending from the whole of the Rhiwbina side held the visitors out and eventually led to a number of breaks upfield that Richard Saltmarsh capitalised on with a wonderfully elaborate drop goal that cunningly deflected off a number of players before hitting the crossbar and sliding over- securing us another 3 points. That kick really was 'The Icing on the Cake' . The crowd of loyal supporters saw a determined battling display from a confident  side and more than made up for the defeats of last season.

Final score Rhiwbina 32-Pontyclun 0

     Rhiwbina 2nds v Llanishen 3rds

Dave Hobbs 2nds were on fine form against a powerful Llanishen 3rds who were hopeful of a win against the Squirrels.

But they were blown away as the seconds ran in try after try in a display of 'champagne rugby' despite the wind.

Here Vince Knight rounds off a length of the field move and gets another great try.

Richard Marshall slots over another kick on his return game for the Squirrels.

Final score-somewhere near 42-12.

Great to see so many of the boys (Old and New)make the effort to support and play for the seconds and give the Coaches a real headache over selection.
