S   Rhiwbina 3rds v Caerau Ely 2nds

TThe Squirrels 3rd Team played Caerau Ely 2nds in a friendly at Caedelyn on a day when Rhiwbina RFC fielded 3 teams.

On paper the visitors should have been the favourites being a Second outfit but we were treated to a feast of running rugby as the quicker Rhiwbina team led by Captain Dave Hobbs put a larger Caerau side to the sword.

The pattern of the match was set early on when some loose kicking from the visitors put the 'Man of the Match' Chris Boughton in space and he carved them open with a number of tries with unbeleivable bursts of speed and fantastic sidesteps and dummies. With the match being played in a great spirit and Caerau not able to exploit their massive weight advantage in the passive scrums Rhiwbina showed quick hands and outside half Niall dictated the game with some fantasic touch finding kicks and also got the backline going to run at their opponents when the spaces opened up.

Some great lineout work from Andy 'Wheres my Balls?' Hughes and good backrowing from a returning Hugo Frost together with Matt Bloodworth and young Spud always provided quick ball for the backs.

The game was effectively over as a contest at half time as Buffer Boughton continued to run in some spectacular tries to bag a personal total of 5 in the match-this could be a club record!!

To give Caerau their dues they never let their heads go down and played cracking rugby to the last minute but were just denied a try by some desperate cover tackles that hauled them down agonisingly short of the line.

Not to be outdone Joe and Spud ran in length of the field tries and Niall was denied a similar try by the Caerau 'Man of the Moment' our very own Brain 'Ded' Sparkes -on loan-who tackled him as he crossed the line and dislodged the ball!!

Some stirling tackling especially from Champy and Spuds chargedown to set up another try were other highlights together with Tony Bartletts outrageous dummy's...again!

Another great moment was seeing father and son Bob and Tom Lowe having a run out together in the second half-a magic moment (spoiled when Bob dropped a pass!)

All in all a great performance with some players firmly putting their hands up for the 1st and 2nd teams.

A big thanks to the Caerau boys for a entertaining game played in a great spirit!
