S St Albans v Rhiwbina

Div 5 SE League Fixture

Sat 14/10/06

This was the top of the table clash that everyone had been waiting for. The two unbeaten Div 5 SE sides clashed at Tremorfa park to see who would take the spoils and lead the table. Over the din of the stolen motorbikes wheelying around the field it was Rhiwbina who got off to a flyer and ran in three first half tries showing great handling skills in the backs and control at the set pieces and breakdowns.

The pack had a solid scrum and the lineouts were superb with hooker Matt Lord on his first team debut having no trouble finding his jumpers with his precision throws and an excellent all round game.

The first half saw Rhiwbina score 3 tries . Winger Luke Brazier got our opening try and Paul Cooper rounded off a superb backs move to crash over for the second and a neat try from scrum half Dan Salter who completely outfoxed his opposite number at the base of the St Albans scrum to steal in for the third which Salty converted. The pack were dominant and James Huntley threatened every time he took the ball on one of his bullocking runs. The third try left Rhiwbina 17-0 at half time .

Ben Wells also had a great game on the flank on his debut and despite having a heavy cold was strong in the tackle and when going forward. Captain Gavin Harris had a massive game and led from the front.

All credit to St Albans in the second half-they did not let their heads go down and gave Rhiwbina a game and almost scored on a couple of occasions. They were to be congratulated for running all penalties instead of going for the posts. Only magnificent last gasp cover tackles from Richy Saltmarsh and Dave Brockway kept them from going over.

In the end the Rhiwbina pack managed another try for second row Andrew Dugdale from a well worked lineout drive and wrapped the game up. Rhiwbina will be left feeling they could have bagged a few more tries but on occassions the final pass/decision let them down. They will be happy to be back at the top of the table and still unbeaten in the League and even happier to have kept the Buns from scoring.

The travelling Rhiwbina crowd were satisfied with the victory and this more than made up for the previous Saturdays dissapointment over the Canton fixture not going ahead.

Rhiwbina have only conceded 17 points in 4 games and now eagerly await the rescheduled clash with Canton at home next Saturday!

The Phillip ENIS award for services to Rhiwbina Rugby went to Luke 'Bealey' Brazier for his control of the bouncing ball and subsequent up and under-back to himself and the Brian ELLEND 'Hands of Glass' award went to John 'the Brewery' Brinkworth for some valiant attempts at holding onto a dry ball.

Final Score:

St Albans 0-22 Rhiwbina

Rhiwbina 2nds v Whitchurch 1sts

Rhiwbina 2nds had a hard match against local rivals Whitchurch over at Caedelyn. In the absence of Dave Hobbs, Wayne Evans led the Squirrels to a great 35-12 victory in a game that was very close at half time (8-5). Sterlihg performances from veteran prop Eugene and Andrew Hughes who gave up his backs position to join the forwards and who was a salmon in the lineout. Dave Neal gave extra bite to the second row and Chucka helped out at prop. Great games from Garth, Geraint, Casey's Gang and Rod to keep the seconds on a winning run with a second half performance that out-muscled a difficult Whitchurch side in a game that had a certain amount of edge!

Thanks to the Gareth and Dave for rushing back from Barbados to get a game-Cheers Guys!

Final score Rhiwbina 35-12 Whitchurch

Rhiwbina Youth v Maesteg Celtic

The Youth were supposed to be playing a local derby at Llandaff -but they called off late Friday afternoon so we entered the pool and drew this fixture away at Maesteg.

The squad led by James Bird completely outclassed a determined Celtic's side with standout performances from Nicky Diamond who epitomised the hard work of the big Rhiwbina pack. Debut's for flanker Dan and a superb showing (earning him a celebratory drink)from winger Garrell rounded off a hat trick of wins this weekend for Rhiwbina RFC in what is turning out to be a great season for the club!

Final Score:

Maesteg Celtic 0-44 Rhiwbina Youth

Thanks to Brinky for sorting out Dempseys for us and a great night was had by all.
