Rhiwbina v St Josephs

Saturday 13th January 2007

Caedelyn Park

Rhiwbina defied the elements to get this fixture to go ahead against our local rivals St Josephs RFC at Caedelyn Park.

The Squirrels came into this game on the back of an 11 game unbeaten run and were keen to continue their impressive form.

After the fantastic welcome we had earlier in the year from the crowd down at Blackwier a large Rhiwbina following came out to return the compliment.

The Joes turned up early and looked impressive in the warm up before the game and obviously hoped to derail the Rhiwbina juggernaut.

Against a very strong wind Rhiwbina took the game to our rivals and opened the score with a great try from flying Full Back Dave 'Danger Frame' Brockway after a great backs move-duly converted by Richard 'Kofi Annan' Saltmarsh.

Rhiwbina then hit a purple patch running everything into the wind against the Joes and got their reward with another try in the first quarter for James 'Bulldozer' Huntley that went unconverted to lead 12-0  before a spirited Joes fightback brought them an unconverted  try from a good backs move to take it into half time 12-5.

The second half gave Rhiwbina the advantage of the strong wind and the Squirrels piled on the pressure taking apart the Joes scrum with a large number against the head and with the driving lineout causing all sorts of problems for our visitors.

With the good natured banter between the Rhiwbina 'Barmy Army' and the Joes boys reaching an amusing crescendo in the second half the Squirrels fans almost detected a faint grin from the Joes' Hooker and replacement Scrum Half as they were driven yards backward again in the set pieces!

The Squirrels then extended their lead following a second try from Dave 'Hair Tongs' Brockway and a great backs move from replacement winger Vince 'We're watching you....' Knight which led to a hamstring stretching wonder try for Paul 'Thicklip' Cooper.

Salty got a total of two conversions and Mark 'Maldwyn' Lee got a precious penalty to take our lead to 27-5 before the Ref brought to a close to a hard fought and aggressive game.

Some great performances from Liam Neal and Ed Hampson who were everywhere, Garth Adams for some great wingwork and the whole side for working as a team, but the Phillp ENIS Man of the Match Award goes to Dave Brockway for some great running and tackling, 2 tries and great hair.

A big thanks to the Rhiwbina Supporters who were the 16th man again and who turned up despite the blustery conditions to support the boys!

Another great night at the club-12 wins out of 12 and all to play for.

A big hand for the Joes who yet again proved to be a fierce and committed set of opponents and all the very best to them for the rest of the season.

Final Score:

Rhiwbina RFC 27-5 St Josephs RFC

 'Come on the Squirrels!'
