S   Rhiwbina 3rds v Tetbury

Whitchurch Hospital

This long awaited match between ourselves and our great friends from over the border Tetbury RFC harks back to the days when we played them quite regularly thanks to the ties formed between us by Dai Hobbs who was former Captain, Coach and Chairman of the English side.

We decided to use our brand new kit kindly donated by our sponsors 'The Fox and Hounds' Public House in Whitchurch and after a few problems finding a suitable size for Hobbsy the boys hit the field to try and further the 3rds winning streak now at 8 games out of 8.

In bright autumnal sunshine the game got off to a flying start with Rhiwbina running everything only for Tetbury to get first blood as a Squirrels attack broke down in midfield and the visitors scooped up the ball to run 65 meters to get the opening score. Jamie had some great sidestepping runs from fullback to get us back into the Tetbury 22. But the game was taking it's toll with Gaz and Lefty having to go off with injuries.

Rhiwbina soon hit back and great movement in the centre from Niall opened up the pitch for winger Scotty to dab down before later breaking a few fingers. Alun also went on some powerful back moves to mix it up in midfield. Then came a great comedy moment with Captain Dave Hobbs trying to round off another attack by diving over the line to score....only to find out to his horror it was the 5 metre line. Ouch! Rhiwbina kept pressing and got another try before half time which was scored and converted by Richy Marshall.

Captain Hobbs provided another vintage moment when the Ref sent him for a 10 minute 'rest' for him to adjust his shirt and shorts that were obviously still causing him big problems. The jumbo Squirrels scrum was by now causing Tetbury a lot of bother with Seth, Champy and Shaggy and Leyo and Matt a powerful front five with Rob Dunlop and Juddy joining Dan in the back row adding the extra bulk they really had no answer to it.

With it poised 12-5 at half time and all the subs getting a chance to have a run on the game then opened up for the Squirrels as the relentless pressure in the scrum and good lineouts began to take it's toll on the visitors. Two tries for 'Man of the Match' Steve on his debut out on the wing started to put some daylight between us and them and with Richy Marshall controlling the game from outside half and nailing some huge conversions the scoreboard kept ticking over. Danny hobbs also grabbed a try along with Tom at scrum half from one of his quickly taken 'Dwayne Peel' like penalty moves.Tetbury who also had a few Rhiwbina lads running out for them proved very stubborn opponents and never gave up and always caused us problems especially at the breakdown. Seth looked good at prop running forwards and backwards and Matt Bloodworth went on some huge runs before bagging a try.

In the gathering gloom the final score was 42-5 to Rhiwbina and everyone got a run out including Tony Bartlett who cruelly missed out on a certain try as the ref claimed he was held up over the line after a jinking run from wing Andrew Richards. Big thanks to Tetbury for making the trip even with a few players missing. Thanks to the Fox and Hounds for the kit and to the healthy band of supporters who turned up on the afternoon.

A good night was had by all back at the Rec with a few games of Higher or Lower and P's and S's claiming a few victims.

The 3rds keep up their impressive unbeaten record this season with nine wins out of nine and hope to keep it going through the season.

COME ON THE SQUIRRELS!!!
