Cae Delyn Park

On a gloomy and overcast winters day we played host to our visitors Tredegar Ironsides-another team that we have not played in many a season. Following on from our recent superb performance beating the table toppers Gwernyfed away we were hoping for a repeat performance. The omens looked good as we scored an early rty from a powerful break upfield and winger Justin Silva crashed over far out. The try went unconverted.

Then we gifted our opponents a try through an soft interception and they scored under the post and converted to lead 5-7.

This was the last time they really looked like scoring and Rhiwbina kept upping the pressure from good lineout drives and eventually regained the lead with tries from centre Paul Cooper who crashed over the line and an amazing charge and turn of speed from prop Mike 'Mousey' Williams.

Some of the handling from the backs was sublime and they showed why Rhiwbina have scored the most tries in our League so far this season.

Both tries went unconverted and the Squirrels led 15-7 before Tredegar Ironsides got a late penalty to take the score 15-10 at half time.

In the second half Tredegar Ironsides disrupted us at the scrum but had no answer to our driving lineout. This platform set up a try for flanker Ben Wells. The lineout was effective all afternoon with Matt Lord's accurate throwing giving the jumpers good ball. The back row of Hammy, Ben and Gavin were everywhere and hunted down the visitors and did not give them any time on the ball. Rhiwbina's defence was immense today and prevented the Ironsides from getting into the game at all. Salty, Coops and Brinky tackled everything that came at them, Bealey put in some fantastic cover hits on his first game back from injury and it was only a matter of time before Rhiwbina opened up the opponents again and Silva bagged his second try after picking up some loose ball and cutting open the Irons' defence. Salty got the conversion. In the final quarter the visitors' discipline slipped and they had a player sin binned and another red carded leaving us a simple penalty shot in front of the post which Salty slotted over. The match finished 30-10 to the Squirrels in the gathering mid winter gloom.

Rhiwbina could have had a number of other tries if not for the final pass being dropped or mis-timed with the try line begging but they did the hard work when and where it mattered and got the 5 tries, secured the win and the bonus point. As has been pointed out we have the most bonus points of any side in Wales and shows that although we have lost a few games narrowly we are always getting the tries and keeping within a score of our opponents.

Tredegar Ironsides proved tough opponents with a very capable scrummaging platform and it is easy to see why they are only just below us in the League. We wish them all the best for the season and look forward to the rematch up at the Rec next year.

Afterwards entertainment was provided at the Players Christmas Party by a comedy hypnotist who had no problem putting Rossco, Wardy and Smithy under his spell although a number he could not mesmerise proved his theory that idiots and drunks cannot be hypnotised!!

Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

Come on the Squirrels
