Rhiwbina Youth 2006/7
At last the long wait was over-after 7 seasons without a Youth Team (for various reasons that the Club had no control over) a Rhiwbina RFC Youth returned to the Club and set off across the border for their first competitive fixture against Weston Hornets.
This was a hard physical encounter and a strong Hornets side competed for everything but the effort put in by the Rhiwbina team began to take it's toll and the Hornets's had the sting taken out of them with an early try by wing Nathan Rahman -from a good backline move by the Squirrels and gave us an early 5-0 lead.
It wasn't until the second half that Rhiwbina began to run everything out of their own half that the Hornets began to look exposed and a great move from centre Tom 'It's not Unusual' Russell Jones led to him crashing under the posts for a try-converted by Captain James Bird.
In the end injuries to the Hornets front row led to passive scrums which Rhiwbina took advantage of by putting some of the front row into the back row and this quick thinking led to Mousey Williams rampaging over the line from a 10 metre charge to get the all important try that wrapped up the game. Duly converted by Birdy. Final score 19-0
This had been a very hard fought win for a Rhiwbina team with very little experience of playing together but who have the potential of winning many more games this season. Next match is a Cup game against Llantwit Major-date to be confirmed.
The lads enjoy some pepsi and milkshakes after the game.
Come on the Squirrels
