The people, events, books and films that inspire me

Marc Bolan inspired me to learn the guitar. Where I grew up it wasn't fashionable to like men who wore make up. Then again, I liked to be different. This man was my childhood hero with his catchy riffs and simple, yet different, lyrics. And T Rex still sound brilliant today.

Elton John and Bernie Taupin inspired me to write and craft songs. While I always loved words ahead of music, these two taught me how to weave them together. No one quite writes lyrics like Bernie.

Dale Carnegie inspired me to change my beliefs as a teenager. I don't know if I won any friends or influenced anybody, but I think I treated others with more respect.

To Kill A Mockingbird - the book that changed my view of the world and literature. I was 16 when I read this book and marveled at the powerful message and the fight for justice when there wasn't a hope. It fuelled my idealism and made me want to fight for justice and fair play. Maybe that helped me towards environmental health.

Dances With Wolves - this magical, moving film confirmed that we can all live together and learn from each other.

John Sullivan - one of the best English sitcom writers. From Just Good Friends. through Only Fools and Horses, to Dear John, he created memorable characters, brilliants lines and fully developed plots that left no loose ends. This man is a genius.

Inspector Morse never did much for me as a novel, but the TV series was, and still is, the supreme TV drama. The high production values, sublime acting, and complex plots make me want to write crime fiction to the same superlative standards. Inspirational.

Geoff Hamilton - the voice of Gardeners World for so many years. Geoff made gardening fascinating and blazed a trail for organic gardeners to follow. Sadly, sadly missed.
