College Youths Peal Weekend was planned as a happy occasion. A time for Members to get together, have some good ringing and enjoy traditional hospitality. In the event, it took place against a sombre background which inevitably cast a cloud over proceedings.
On the Tuesday before the event the tragic events of 11th September took place in New York and Washington. With Peal Weekend only a few days away the Society faced a difficult choice as to whether we should cancel. After careful consideration, we decided to go ahead whilst leaving individual organisers to make their own decisions based on local opinion. In arriving at this conclusion, we were encouraged by our US Members who, whilst having to cancel their own planned peals in
Washington DC because of transport and other difficulties, supported going ahead on the basis that life must go on. Despite all the problems, a Society handbell peal was rung in Washington.
The Society would like to dedicate all the peals rung on Peal Weekend to those who were killed, injured, bereaved or otherwise affected by the events of 11th September. Our thoughts go out to all our friends in the United States at this difficult time.
God bless America.
