St. Helen's Church
The Church is believed to date from pre-Norman times. It was replaced  c1150 by a cruciform Church, whose outlines may be traced in the outer walls of the present transepts. The c14 saw a third Church built.
Since then there have been many alterations and refurbishments, the latest in 2004

  • Honour for Sandal Rotarian. ONE of David Pickover’s last tasks in his year as president of Wakefield Rotary Club was to present Roland Mold with a Paul Harris Fellowship for his ‘remarkable’ level of commitment to the club and the community it serves. Roland, who lives in Attlee Crescent, Sandal, set up the club’s annual schools chess competition, introduced the Rotary Chess Initiative into local schools (including Sandal Magna), was the driving force behind the mock interviews programme at Kettlethorpe High School, leads a team of Rotarians in the Literacy in Schools enterprise and is one of the team involved in pushing patients in wheelchairs to Sunday services at Pinderfields Hospital chapel. He is now organising the rota for this. In between he has at various times been chairman of the community service and vocational  committees. “This is a tremendous record of service,” said David. Thanking David and the club, Roland said this was his 45th year in Rotary and he had been a member of six clubs in different parts of the world. “In all honesty,” he added, “I can say this club does more for Rotary than any other I’ve been in.”

  • CANCER CARE: Funds for the work done by Macmillan Cancer Care nurses were boosted by nearly £370 raised by Sandal Community Association at a coffee morning at the Castle Inn on Wednesday (Sept 23). • CHILDREN about to step up from junior to secondary school have been presented with dictionaries as part of Wakefield Rotary Club’s reading campaign.
The club arranged the distribution of nearly 500 of the books throughout schools in the district. In response, many of them were able to make donations to Rotary funds.
At Sandal Magna Junior School, where he is involved in reading and chess projects, Rotarian Roland Mold handed out 40 dictionaries at the last assembly of the academic year.

  • KEITH SOUTER who lives, as he puts it, within arrow-shot of Sandal Castle, has used it as the setting for his tenth novel, a 15th century whodunnit.
The retired doctor, who has also written nine non-fiction books, says he hopes his latest mystery story will encourage more people to delve into Wakefield’s and the castle’s rich history. The novel, The Fool’s Folly, centres around King Richard’s heir, John de la Pole, who was a descendant of poet Geoffrey Chaucer.
He is chairing a meeting of the Council of the North, which governed this area, when there is an unexpected death. This is investigated by judge Sir Giles Beeston who, with his assistant Will Holland, discovers more sinister fatalities.
Dr Souter, who is working on four other books – including two novels – has put a copy of The Fool’s Folly, in Sandal library. It is on sale at Waterstones in The Ridings shopping centre, and can also be bought through online bookstores.
