THE GONDOLIERS
By Gilbert
& Sullivan
Chichester
Festival Theatre
26 April - 23
August

For a review
of this production see http://www.qsulis.demon.co.uk/Website_Louise_Gold/The_Gondoliers_Review.htm
The
show will be full of the joy of musical celebration with over 43 musicians and
actors on the expansive Venetian set in the Festival Theatre. This is the first
time we have produced a new production of a G&S at the Festival
Theatre
The Gondoliers is directed by Martin Duncan, our Artistic Director, whose
production of HMS Pinafore is currently enjoying its sixth revival at the Savoy
Theatre in the West End, of which the Times said, 'Dazzlingly witty...sharp
and funny. A good rollicking evening...'

Venice, the most seductive city in the world. A glorious day in St Mark's Square
and two Gondoliers are getting married, until they learn that one of them is
really the long lost King of Barataria. But which one of them?
Gilbert's most ludicrous and tender hearted story combined with Sullivan's
sunniest music. The Gondoliers surpasses all their comedies for wit, warmth and
sheer delight in absurdity. A musical for romantics of any age.
The cast includes Martin Marquez fresh from Anything Goes at the National
Theatre, Joseph Shovelton from HMS Pinafore at the Savoy and Lisa Pullman from
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at the London Palladium.
Martin Duncan is Artistic Director of Chichester. Previously Artistic Director
of Nottingham Playhouse, he has directed theatre and opera productions all over
Europe. Recent productions include The Rake's Progress and The Abduction From
The Seraglio (Munich), Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci (Royal Albert Hall),
Harrison Birtwistle's The Last Supper (Berlin Staatsoper & Glyndebourne) and
HMS Pinafore (D'Oyly Carte) which was revived for a sixth time at the Savoy
Theatre earlier this year.
The critics said of Martin Duncan's HMS Pinafore:
'Dazzlingly witty...sharp
and funny...' The Times
'Martin Duncan's witty, bulgingly tongue-in-cheek
production brings G & S fizzingly up to date without
cheapening or vulgarising the great Savoy Operas
tradition' The Daily Mail
'A good rollicking evening' The Times
