| The Revd Canon Henry Urling Whelpton |
The
Revd Henry Urling Whelpton, son of the first Vicar of St Saviours, was born at
Upton, Buckinghamshire in 1860. He was educated
at Eastbourne College, Harrow and Pembroke College Cambridge and graduated in 1882, gaining his M A in 1886.
He completed his theological training at Wells Theological College, being made
deacon in 1884. He served his title at Christ Church, Albany Street, London
before being appointed to All Saints, Hastings in 1889. He became the
curate of St Saviours in 1895, and in 1897 was appointed its second Vicar. Fr
Whelpton was made an honorary Canon of Chichester in 1918. He resided in St
Saviour's Close, Hardwick Road, Eastbourne. He married Edith Beatrice Kinnear in
1892 and had two children, one of whom, Marsden, was curate of St Saviour's from
1924 -29 and Warden of St Saviour's Choir School for just one year in 1929 until
his early death from tuberculosis, contracted during the war.
Canon Henry Urling Whelpton died on 29th December 1935, aged 75 years.
