Stuart Burns. Sacristan and Head Server Stuart was born in Lewes in 1947 and lived in Seaford for 29 years. For many years he was very much involved in the life and work of Seaford Parish Church. He pursued a career in the Health Service in Eastbourne and moved to Eastbourne in 1976. His main work as a Sacristan is making sure everything is provided for the worship of the church. This includes ordering materials such as wine, wafers, candles and incense, making sure that the appropriate vessels are correctly prepared and set out. He has a wide knowledge of the Church Year and ensures that the appropriate colour of frontals is on the altar and that eucharistic vestments are laid out for each of the daily masses. A priest’s work at St Saviour’s is enviably easy because everything is provided and Stuart makes sure that the correct books are out, with marking ribbons always in their proper places ready for the service to commence. During Sunday worship he organises the servers, making sure that each knows what he or she has to do – it is to Stuart that the clergy also go, if they have queries about worship! Stuart is to be found in church before and after services take place; there is much work behind the scenes to ensure the smooth running of all that goes on in St Saviours. Holy Week is undoubtedly the busiest week of the year for Stuart – with at least two services every day, and many of them exceedingly complex in terms of liturgy. How fortunate we are have someone who can help us "to worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness". |
