Aims

During the 19th and early part of the 20th centuries several thousand Scots emigrated to Argentina and Patagonia. They came from all parts of Scotland and from many social and economic backgrounds to work in the cities, especially Buenos Aires, and on the land. Their story is largely unknown to Scottish family historians. Also, until recent years the obstacles of distance and language have often discouraged those interested in trying to trace forebears. Happily, the development of the Internet and e-mail have greatly improved opportunities for research.

This web site has two main purposes. Firstly, to provide an introduction to the story of the emigrants and to suggest ways in which to research their lives in the new country; and secondly, to give lists of Scots, drawn from various publications and from records held in Argentina and elsewhere.

The lists currently included in this site only represent some of those Scots who settled there. In part this is due to difficulties in identifying Scots from other British immigrants, for records do not always mention Scottish origins, so undoubtedly some are missed because they are described as British. Also, some important records have yet to be searched. Consequently, those included here appear either because they give Scotland as their place of origin or their surnames and other evidence are probable indications they are Scots. Further lists will appear on this site as the information becomes available.
