World Shotokan Karate-do Association Championships 2009
Sendai and Kushiro members have yet again proved their high quality at the recent World Shotokan Karate-do Association Championships in Cancun, Mexico.
Sensei John James, Michael Davison and Holly Sterling were selected to represent England at the event. Taking place over two days with cadets (16-17yrs) and Juniors (18-20yrs) on the Saturday,
and all senior events on Sunday. England performed admirably winning a total of thirteen medals with four of them being Gold.
Michael Davison was on excellent form taking 5th place in the Male Individual Kumite, only missing out on a decision to the eventual winner. Sensei John James took Bronze in the Senior Male Team Kata
along with fellow team mates Antony Duffy and Dean Field. Holly Sterling was on superb form in both Kata and Kumite events as she took 5th place in the Female individual Kumite and 3rd place in
Female Individual Kata.
The England Male Team went into the event as current World and European Champions. In 2007 England beat USA in the final, this time they met in the semi final. The American team looked sharp in the previous
rounds and were on a roll, until the English team stood in their way. England won 3-2. Next up for the England team was Czech Republic in the final, an unknown quantity.The England team showed their strength
in depth with nothing getting in their way and that was shown with a 4-1 win in the final to crown them 2009 World Team Champions.

The event was again popular with competitors and spectators, which created a great buzz throughout the day. Shotokan Cup 2009
The KUGB’s Shotokan Cup took place on Saturday 5th September at the Queens Park Leisure Centre in Chesterfield. The event, for Black and Brown Belts only is now in its 34th year and attracts
competitors from across the UK. There were many outstanding performances from our members, particularly Sensei John James Bruce and Megan Dent who became Grand Champions (winning Kata and Kumite)
in their respective events. Holly Sterling continued with her winning form taking the Ladies Kata title along with Bronze in the Kumite event. Michael Davison again showed his excellent form taking Silver in
the Male Kumite, while Tracy Bruce (Kata), Kirsty Askew (Kata) and Beth Nicholson (Kumite) all took Bronze medals.
At the end of the event 'The Shotokan Cups'were awarded to the best Kata performance and the best Kumite performance, these went to Holly Sterling (Kata) and Sensei John James (Kumite). Congratulations to all competitors.
Grand Slam 2009
Queens Park Leisure Centre was the host for the second Grand Slam competition of the year. Sensei John James Bruce, Michael Davison, Holly Sterling, Tracy Bruce, Megan Dent, Kirsty Askew
and Sami Anjum all competed. This event is for national squad members of the England, Wales, Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland. With some fantastic performances England dominated the competition,
with an excellent contribution from the Sendai and Kushiro members. Sensei John James ended the day with three 1st places (Kumite, Team Kumite, Team Kata) and one 3rd place (Kata), Michael Davison
took 1st place in the Team Kumite and Holly Sterling won the Ladies Kata and Team Kumite. Congratulations.
National Youth Championships 2009
Many congratulations to our members who competed at the National Youth Championships on Saturday 4th July in Chesterfield.
Kirsty Askew, Chris Hamilton, Megan Dent and Martin Fraser all performed excellently resulting in taking 3 medals from 4 competitors.

9th City of Liverpool Youth Championships
The City of Liverpool Youth Championships took place at Greenbank Sports Academy on Saturday 30th May. The championship is a fundraising event for the Lord Majors charity and an event we have
supported for many years. This year we had a total of 14 competitors and with some fine performances we finished with 7 medals and just missed out on many more. Peter Stothard (Kumite), Debra Hern (Kumite)
and Jessica Green (Kumite) all performed excellently and took bronze medals, while Kirsty Askew (Kata), Chris Hamilton (Kumite), Megan Dent (Kumite) and Liam Liddle (Kumite) went one step further taking silver.

43rd KUGB National Championships
The National Indoor arena, Birmingham hosted the 43rd Karate Union of Great Britain National Championships with competitors from England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and Northern Ireland all hungry to succeed.
The Sendai and Kushiro team again performed fantastically winning four gold, two silver and five bronze medals.
Most outstandingly in the Senior Male Kumite event, John James Bruce, Michael Davison and Stephen Olver achieved an impressive gold, silver and bronze and then went on to take the Senior Male Team Kumite title for the second year running.
Holly Sterling retained her title in the Ladies Kata event with an excellent display of Goju shiho sho in the final, while Megan Dent competing in her very first KUGB National Championships demonstrated the depth in quality throughout the team taking gold in the Girls Kumite.
At the end of the Championship the Sensei Enoeda Trophy was awarded to John James Bruce for the most outstanding senior performance of the day.

British Universities and Colleges Sport - Karate
Congratulations to Holly Sterling on her successful weekend at the BUCS Karate Championship. Holly won the Kumite event last year and for some strange reason she was not entered into the Kata,
this year was different, she was entered into both events and took both titles. Although this may not sound surprising for Holly to win, but the events are held under WKF rules which are very different to our shobu ippon rules.

North West Open 2009
Congratulations to Chris Hamilton (our sole competitor) on his recent success. After a successful Dan grading last month Chris has continued his success by gaining 3rd place in Kata and Kumite events at the 2009 North West Open Championships. Congratulations.
KUGB Grand Slam 2009
Congratulations to members on their performances at the Grand Slam competition on Saturday. Making their debuts at the event was Kirsty Askew, Megan Dent and Sami Anjum. All doing very well for their first time.
Matthew Nicholson took 3rd place in 16-17 Male Kumite.

European Shotokan Karate-do Association Championships 2008
The K2 stadium, Crawley hosted this years ESKA championships and what a championship it turned out to be. The England team took a number of medals,
topping the success was yet again the fantastic run from the Senior Male Kumite Team, successfully defending the title they won last year in Portugal beating Austria in the final.
More success came in the team event with the Junior Male Kumite Team taking the European title beating Hungary in the final. Congratulations to all of the England Team
who competed excellently through the whole weekend.

Sendai Kushiro again selected a team to compete at this years Shotokan Cup. The Shotokan Cup is a very high standard competition as only Brown and Black Belts

National Youth Championships
Sendai Kushiro selected a team of competitors from is recently formed club squads to compete at this years National Youth Championships. There
were some very promising performances from the team. Many of the squad made it to the final stages of the eliminations only to lose out to eventual
winners. This wasnt the case for Holly Sterling, Jacob Baker and Bethany Ho who all progressed to the finals. Holly withdrew from the Kata final through
injury so settled for Bronze, Bethany Ho, in her very first National event, showed promising signs taking Bronze in the Girls Brown belt Kata. Jacob Baker
showed his quality with an excellent performance of Unsu in the Junior Male Kata event taking GOLD. Congratulations.

Liverpool Youth Championships
Sendai Kushiro had 18 competitors travel to the Liverpool Youth Championships this year. Most of the competitors missed their Kumite events
due to a late pick up from the bus company, however everyone took it in their stride and displayed their talent in the Kata events. Most of our
competitors made it to the final stages of the eliminations. Kirsty Askew went one stage further making it to the children's Kata final
after beating off some strong competition. Kirsty, the only girl in the finals, placed 4th.

KUGB National Championships
The NIA, Birmingham hosted the KUGB National Championships with competitors from all over the UK in attendance. Sendai Kushiro again showed their quality
winning medals in all except one senior event, the most notible performances came from the Senior Male Team and Holly Sterling who took place GOLD
in Kumite and Kata respectively.
Many of our younger members were competing at their very first KUGB Nationals and came away with their head held very high, having performed excellently.

British University Karate Championships
The annual University Karate Championship took place in Sheffield. Holly Sterling, Brooks Kenny and Adanna Moore all took part in the event.
The championship was based on WKF rules with many rules very different to our usual KUGB rules, however that didnt stop Holly
as she continued with her fantastic results from the Grand Slam taking another GOLD Medal, this time in the Ladies -60kg Kumite event.

KUGB Grand Slam Competition
Queens Park Sports Centre, Chesterfield hosted the first of two Grand Slams in the year on Saturday 23rd February 2008.
All national squad members from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland come together to compete. All those from Sendai and Kushiro who were selected
onto the squads during the recent selections travelled down for what ended up to be the largest Grand Slam to date. There were some outstanding performances
coming from John James Bruce who won the senior male kumite, Holly Sterling who was grand champion winning the senior ladies Kata and junior ladies kumite and
Afanasie Tamciuc on his Grand Slam debut took 3rd place in 14-15 yrs kumite. Congratulations to everyone who competed.
KUGB England Squad Selections
Over the final weekend in January the KUGB England Kumite squad selections took place at The Liverpool Red Triangle dojo.
Record number turned out for the selections and the quality was yet again superb. Saturday hosted the hopefull under 21s and Sunday the Seniors. Both days proved
to be successful for the club with 8 of our members being selected for the Kumite squad.
Kata squad selections took place the following Saturday with more success with 5 of our members being selected the squad.

European Championships 2007
This years European Shotokan Championships was hosted by Potugal with this years championship being held over 3 days due to ever increasing numbers.
However the participants hadnt just improved numerically but the standard of this competition continues to be the very best. England
continued with their fantastic results at the recent World Championships with again the Male Kumite Team coming out as Champions. The strength in the team was show in the
individual event when Michael Davison took Bronze and CHRIS CRAY was crowed EUROPEAN INDIVIDUAL KUMITE CHAMPION following on from Matt Price 's victory in 2006.

Seahouses 2007
This year’s championships took place at the usual venue in Seahouses on 4th November. After being so successful at this competition last year we had expectations to meet and we didn’t disappoint. A total of 30 competitors representing our club and every one of them was a credit to the club.
The morning started with the Kata events and with some fine performances we were already making a mark on the competition and there was more to come in the Kumite and the team events. As the day went on we got better.
Gold medals were won by – Dovydas Simkus (Kumite), Ian Kirby (Kumite and Team Kumite), Jessica Green (Kata, Team Kata and Team Kumite), Cole Chesterton (Team Kumite), Sabrina Ferguson (Tam Kumite), Sam Gills (Team Kumite), Danielle Elliott (Kumite), Kirsty Askew (Team Kumite), Katie Hall (Team Kata), Mary Querry (Team Kata).

Sendai 40th Year Aniversary Course
Sendai Karate club hosted a one off course will past and present instructors to celebrate their 40 year birthday. The course instructed by Sensei Harford, Nicholson, Murray, Holdsworth and Bruce was enjoyed by over 70 people.
An excellent course was rounded off with many people going to Fitzgeralds pub for a buffet and to watch some historic videos of Sendai Karate club including a documentary of Sendai club from the 80s and 1990 National Championships. Many
of the past members turned up and shared some of their memories. A great day.

Northern Regions 2007
South Leeds Stadium was the venue again for the Northern Region Championships and success continued. Holly Sterling and Tara Cummings took the Ladies individual titles
in Kumite and Kata respectively. Kevin Lampis impressed again as he took Silver in the Children's Kata. Tracy Bruce, recently gained her 3rd Dan, was placed 3rd in the Laides

World Championships 2007
The 2007 World Shotokan Karate Association Championships took place in Bydgozsz, Poland and it turned out to be a memorable one for England.
This particualr championships had record high competitors and the standard was yet again superb. The Senior Male ENGLAND Kumite Team took the world title in fantastic style
beating Spain, Sweden, Russia and USA on the way. This is the first time since 1990 and it will certainly go down in history with all final fights being won with ippon. The Team in fighting order

Over 60 members were successful with gaining there new belt at the recent Kyu grading with Sensei Garry Harford 7th Dan held at
Crowtree Leisure Centre, Sunderland. Our next grading is with Sensei Randolph Williams 6th Dan on Sunday 9th December 2007.

Spring Camp
Sensei John James and Holly Sterling made the long trip down to Paignton, Devon for the KUGB Spring Camp with Sensei Andy Sherry, 8th Dan, Terry O Neil, 7th Dan,
Bob Poynton, 7th Dan, Bob Rhodes, 7th Dan, Billy Higgins, 7th Dan and Frank Brennan, 6th Dan.
With five Days of fantastic tuition starting at 8am on Monday morning, the course was packed with students travelling from all over the UK and abroad. Various other
activities took place throughout the week including Bo lessons, Lecture, a Kata Competition, Social Evening and Instructors Qualification. We also took time after
the classes to go to Paignton Zoo. Everyone had a great time and are looking forward to the Summer Camp at Lancaster in August. Hope to see lots of our members there.
Grand Slam 07
Congratulations to Sensei John James, Holly Sterling, Tara Cummings and Kevin Lampis on their recent performances at the first
Grand Slam of the year. The Grand Slam is a competition between the English, Welsh and Scotish National Squads.
Sensei John James took 1st in the Senior Male Kumite and 2nd in the Male Kata, Holly Sterling took fourth in the Ladies Kata after pulling
out of the final due to illness. Tara Cummings lost in the quater finals in the Kumite and Kevin Lampis put in a good performance
in the Kata section but at 14 years old was competing against adults, a very difficult task.
Kyu Grading
76 people were graded to the next rank by Sensei Garry Harford 6th Dan
on 11th February 2007 at Crowtree Leisure Centre. Our members page has now
been updated.
New Kata Lesson will be held at Raich Carter Sports Centre, Sunderland
from 12 - 2pm on Sunday 18th February 2007. Cost £4.
National Kata Selection
Sensei John James, Holly Sterling, Tara Cummings and Kevin Lampis were
all selected for the KUGB England Kata squad for 2007. Congratulations.
Selections were again held at the Liverpool Red Triange Dojo by Chief
instructor to the KUGB Sensei Andy Sherry 8th Dan.
Chesterfield Dan Grading
Congratulations to Paul Mason on gaining his 1st Dan Black Belt at the
recent KUGB Dan grading. He was successfully graded by Sensei Andy Sherry
8th Dan and Sensei Frank Brennan 6th Dan.
National Squad Selection
Congratulations to Sensei John James (senior squad), Tara Cummings
(senior squad) and Holly Sterling (junior Squad) on their selection the
the KUGB England Kumite squads. The squad selections were held at the Red
Triangle Dojo, Liverpool over two days with juniors on Saturday 27th
January and seniors on the following day.
