A simple blood test to detect the early signs of lung cancer is a step closer following the discovery of a molecular marker that indicates the presence of the disease.
Scientists from the Philipps University of Marburg, Germany, have discovered that levels of
pleiotrophin, a heparin binding growth factor, are 11 times higher in people with the disease.
"
If large scale research confirms our results then testing for the molecule could help in diagnosing the disease," says Gerhard Zugmaier, who led the study.

Cancer Research UK agrees. Richard Hoey, spokesman for the charity, says: "If this work is carried through into a test then it will have major repercussions for cancer treatment.

About 39,000 people are diagnosed with lung cancer every year in Britain and 34,000 die with smoking largely responsible.
Dr Zugmaier's team took blood samples from 63 patients with small cell lung cancer and 22 with non-small cell lung cancer. The levels of pleiotrophin were then compared with those from 41 healthy volunteers.
Raised concentrations of pleiotrophin were found in 81 per cent of all the lung cancer patients. Only one of the 41 healthy people had raised levels. On average, those with lung cancer had 11 times more pleiotrophin than the healthy volunteers.
The results further indicated that the levels of pleiotrophin increase as the lung cancer advances and that those who responded well to treatment had the lowest concentration of the molecule.

Levels of pleiotrophin are also raised in patients with pancreatic and colon cancer. The molecule is believed to promote cell division, the growth of the blood supply to tumors and may be important in cancer spread.
