Stargate SG-1 FAQ

This list is not comprehensive but does cover several of the things that  I get asked regularly,  if there's anything I've not covered here please ask.

Abbreviations

M.A.L.P. Mobile Analytic Laboratory Probe.

D.H.D. Dial Home Device.

G.D.O. Garage Door Opener.

F.R.E.D. Field Remote Expeditionary Device

T.E.R. Transphase Eradication Rod:

N.I.D.  The secret Government organisation that often has different ideals to that of Stargate Command. What the initials mean however has never been established in the series.

A Tale of Two Stargazes

Children of the Gods, we are introduced to the DHD on Abydos, Sam says this is what was missing from the dig at Giza in 1928.

Solitudes, the 2nd Antarctic gate and DHD discovered

Touchstone, that second gate supposedly in Storage was being used by the
NID, Hammond regained control of it. We also see the DHD being used in the back of a trailer, Daniel just missed the glyphs as the rogue team escaped.

Nemesis, Jack beamed the Gate abroad Thor's Ship, however Thor's ship was destroyed on re-entry and the gate was presumed to be too.

Small Victories, The Antarctic gate was up running and installed at the SGC so SG1 could return.

Watergate, we discover that the Russians had found the original gate in the sea, it was not destroyed as Thor's ship broke up in the atmosphere, and are using it with the original DHD from Giza, which they had acquired during WW2 from the Germans.

48 Hours, Daniel and Major Davis went to the Russians and asked them for the DHD so they could free the trapped Teal'c, the Russians agreed but the DHD was blown up as they saved Teal'c.

During that episode it did seem that they had forgotten about the Antarctic DHD, but it was explained what happened in Season 6, episode Frozen.

Sam: "The one [DHD]found with the Antarctic 'gate died shortly after it was brought back to Area 51. It was used a few times and then just ran out of energy. That was the first indication we had that the power sources fuelling the 'gate technology have a limited life span. We've run a number of tests comparing the power source to other off world DHDs. We think we now have evidence that the 'gate we found down there is one of the oldest in the entire system. It could be as much as 50 million years old."

The current Stargate in the SGC gateroom is now the original alpha gate once more. The beta gate was attacked by Anubis in Redemption and had to be sent into hyperspace by Jack so that it didn't explode and destroy the base.

The Picture of Sam and Jack Kissing where is it from?

It was taken around the time of Holiday, in season 2 but it's not actually from an episode it's a promotional shot that was done on set, Richard Dean Anderson was messing about and kissed Amanda Tapping. The full size pic can be found here...

http://www.glorianon.com/sg-1/gallery/showgaly7.html

There's also a similar one around the same time with them hugging.

On the same theme there is also a publicity picture of Michael Shanks and Amanda Tapping kissing, which is from the Season 7 episode Resurrection which was written by MS and directed by Amanda and again is not actually a scene from the episode.

Children of the Gods questions

Two things often come up from the pilot episode.

How does Apophis reactivate the Gate?

He must have some kind of hand held device, there is evidence that this type of thing exists, as the Nox, Cassandra in the Future and the Asguard can all open the gate in some way.

However it's probably just a plot oversight, considering it was the pilot episode.

When SG1 travel through the gate they come out the other side cold and covered in ice, why don't we see that in later episodes?

The reason is that to achieve that effect they used a gel make up with was very uncomfortable for the actors, especially as the location shooting for children of the Gods was very wet.

The explanation on the show is given in Solitudes.

HAMMOND: We've installed frequency dampers that limit that to only a slight vibration.

Which presumably solved the problem!

Also see The Childen of The Gods episode page for a description of the scenes that were cut.

Janet's Rank

Like Sam,  Janet starts as a Captain, in early episodes and promotional shots she is a Captain, but by the end of Season 3 she is also a Major, the promotion occurs somewhere between Legacy where we can still see the Captain's bars, and Crystal Skull where the Oak Leaves are visible. She was probably promoted off screen around the same time as Sam in Fair Game and Amanda Tapping has suggested this at a convention.

Chevron Guy

What  is his name? ( a bit outdated now!)

The Spinning Gate

When a gate is dialled on another planet, why doesn't the gate spin the way it does at the SGC?

An answer that could fit in with the fiction of the show, might be that off world gates have a DHD but Stargate command doesn't.

However, the real reason is a production one. The Stargate used for off world locations is a lightweight prop that can be easily moved from one place  to another, whereas the gate in the SGC gateroom is a permanent part of the Stargate set.

Using content from this website

Apart from the screen captures all the downloads on this website are for personal use only and are not to be distributed via any other means such as another website, FTP, Newsgroups, Yahoo groups, CDs or floppy discs without prior written authorisation.

Please do not link directly to any images on this site and as that is stealing my bandwidth.

What is Bandwidth theft?

Everytime a file is downloaded from server via the Internet it costs money...a good analogy is electricity.

If you are running the fridge and a couple of light bulbs in your house the electric meter will be ticking over slowly but turn on heating and the cooker and the energy consummation increases a lot.

But how would you feel, if when your neighbour turned on his cooker, the
electricity was charged to your account not his?

Not very happy I'm sure, but that is what Bandwidth theft is, if you link directly to a file on a server other than yours the cost of the download is paid by the host of *that* site not you.

Fanfiction submissions

I'm sorry I no longer accept fanfiction to archive on this site, neither do I have the time or skills to beta read fanfiction.  However Heliopolis the largest fanfiction archive do accept submissions.
