Reflection for December

Dear Friends,

As we approach Christmas 2011, we are getting a mixture of messages through the media. We have high level talks in Europe with leaders trying to balance the euro books; we have protests in cities across the continent about imposed austerity measures and injustice in the banking systems; and we are constantly being bombarded by advertising encouraging us to “spend, spend, spend “ and our lives will be happier and more fulfilled. Many of us know the enjoyment of “retail therapy”- but it is transient.

  Paul had found more to life when he wrote to friends in Philippi :

" I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want."                  Phil 4:11-12

He had discovered the extravagant gift of God, that of his Son whose birth into a humble family, heralded an offer we would be foolish to refuse:

Hark! The herald-angels sing
Glory to the new-born King!
Peace on earth, and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconciled.

As we enjoy all the Christmas festivities, may we also remember the true value of the gift of Christ.
