Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, is a modern sprawling city of over 100,000 inhabitants, that still retains a small town charm. Keflavik, population, 7.500, is home to a NATO base manned by 3,500 US service personnel. It is also the visitor's entry to Iceland via the international airport there. The district of Geysie or the Golden Circle is a day tour from Reykjavik, the main areas of interest being the Golden waterfall at Gullfoss, the famous geyser area and finally the Žingvellir National Park. Akureyri, 45 minutes by air from Reykjavik, is Iceland's second largest town with a population of 15,000. Despite its comparatively small size it still boasts a university and a symphony orchestra. Myvatn, or Midge Lake lies on an active volcanic belt the resulting lava flows from the many eruptions have left the lake very irregular in shape, with many islets and rock formations in it.
