Alexander Flett, "Yankie", 002, (1878-1933) & Margaret Flett, 003, (1880-1963)

Alex was born at 1pm on Monday, April 1st, 1878 in Fndochty, the fourth child of James Flett, "Yankie", and Annie Campbell. The informant was his father who was also present at the birth.

In 1881, aged 3, he was living with parents and elder sisters, Jane and Barbara at 104 Findochty. His eldest sister, Ann, was living with her maternal grandparents, Alex Campbell and Ann McKenzie at #127, in the east end of the village.

Alex's father died in 1884, and in 1891 the family, now enlarged by sisters, Helen and Jamesina still occupied #104. Sister Barbara, now 15 had left school and was a domestic servant at home with her widowed mother. Alex, just passed his thirteenth birthday was still at school as was sister Helen, aged 9. Jamesina, was only one year old and was illegitimate, her father was not named on her birth certificate.

Sometime before 1902, probably after the death of grandmother, Ann McKenzie, in 1896, the family moved to the Campbell home at #127 Findochty, modern Back Street, no doubt to look after grandfather Alex Campbell.

Margaret was born at 3.20am on Monday, July 19th, 1880 at 15 North Street, Fraserburgh. Her parents were Sandy Flett, fisherman and Maggie Flett, "Dodie", who were married in Findochty on 22nd of October, 1876. Margaret's birth was registered by her father firstly at Fraserburgh on August 9th and then at Buckie on August 14th.

She was the second of 8 children and in the 1881 census she was recorded, aged 10 months, with her parents and 2 year old elder brother John, living at 103 Findochty, modern Sterlochy Street. In 1891 she was recorded as a 10 year old school girl, living with her parents and school boy brothers, John, (12), Alex, (7), and George, (5). Youngest of the family was Jessie Jane, a 3 year old in 1891, but who was to die of TB in 1897, aged 10. In December, 1891, Isabella was born and in 1894, James entered the world but died of bronchitis after only two weeks. shortly after Jessie Jane died, Susan Ann was born. Margaret also had a brother William two years her junior who was brought up by her aunt Margaret Flett and her husband George Smith. He was drowned possibly while still in his teens.

Margaret grew to adulthood at #103 and in 1902, at the age of 22, she married her one time neighbour, Alex. The wedding took place, after Banns, on Friday, December 5th, 1902 at the United Presbyterian Church in the village. The witnesses were William Ross and William Flett who were Alex's first cousins probably, being the sons of William Ross and Ann Flett, "Yankie", of #132, and less certainly of William Flett, "Yankie" and Ann Flett of 213 Findochty.

The couple started their married life in rented accommodation at 23 Blantyre Place Findochty where Maggie, Annie and James were born, later they seem to have moved to 136 Findochty where Alex was born in 1908. Afterwards the family moved to 103 Findochty, eventually re-addressed as 15 Sterlochy Street, the house owned by Margaret's mother, Margaret Flett.

Widow Annie Campbell remarried in 1902 and moved to Lossiemouth where she died in 1920, aged 69. In 1921, Margaret's father, Sandy, died and her mother, Maggie, passed on ten years later.

In 1927, daughter Annie married William Clark, and in 1931 son James married Maggie Cowie, while in 1937, youngest son Alex married Roma MacKay.

An incredibly shy man, Alex spent a number of years in Ladysbridge, the district asylum near Banff, where he died on Sunday, December 24th, 1933 at 1.10am. The cause of death was Myelogenous Leukaemia, from which he had suffered for 8 months. His life had lasted 55 years, 8 months and 23 days, and he was interred at Hillhead Cemetery, Findochty. The informant was Edward Donald, Head Attendant at the institution.

During Alex's absence and after his death, Margaret made a living selling fish, and later selling herbal medicine, in conjunction with the Falkirk firm of William Taylor. She lived in the family home at 15 Sterlochy Street with her unmarried eldest daughter, Maggie, until they moved to 31 Main Street, which had been the home of eldest brother John and his wife Jessie May, in the 1950s. John died in 1954 and so there may be a connection. Later when Maggie married William "Weem" Taylor in 1959, Margaret moved into the Taylor house called "Bloomfield", in Station Road.

Margaret died there in 1963, aged 82, on Thursday the 7th of March at quarter passed midnight. The cause of death was senile cardio vascular degeneration and broncho pneumonia. The informant was her elder son, James. She was buried in Hillhead cemetery where husband Alex had been interred. She was a formidable woman, and on my last visit, she was bedridden and waiting for the end, very composed, reading her bible with the aid of a magnifying glass.
