    Notes:

N1....Janet Jappy died in 1751. She is recorded but not counted here. Two daughters, Jean and Margaret, died in 1748 and a son John died in 1750. I believe that William's wife Helen Prott was the widow of John Anderson marrying for a second time, although there is no record of John Anderson's burial. Helen's mother, Janet Watson was the widow of John Prott, Skipper who died on 6.1.1735 in Broadhyth. There is no record of Janet's death and so she probably moved to Portknockie where her daughter, Christian, was married to William Wood. She is recorded but not counted here. It would seem that most of the Campbell children died in infancy. Helen's son James Anderson may have taken Campbell as his surname.

N2....Alex Gordon was last recorded in 1745.

N3....George Sutherland had a natural son, John by Margaret McIntosh before his marriage. See N.47 in the Shore of Buckie 1751 families.

N4....Anne McKenzie was the widow of George Thain. Grand daughter, Mary, was the natural daughter of Elizabeth Thain and John Anderson. Grand daughter, Helen, was the daughter of son Alex Thain, but the baptismal record does not name the mother, but it may have been Elizabeth Adamson who bore him a son in 1753. Jean Mcbay was the natural daughter of John Mcbay and Isabel Ross. She was probably brought up by George Thain as he was sponsor for her. She was described as coming from Broadhyth at her marriage to Alex Simpson in 1758. She subsequently left Findochty to settle in Portessie.

N5....John Thain was the son of George Thain and Anne McKenzie at S4. Elspet Gordon was the daughter of Alex Gordon and Helen Cumming at S2.

N6....George Gordon was the son of Alex Gordon and Helen Cumming at S2. William Bruce from Shore of Buckie witnessed at son William's baptism and so Jean was probably from there.

N7....John Smith was the son of John Smith and Anna Steel, (S15). Elspet Flett was the daughter of James Flett and Margaret Cumming, (S13).

N8....Margaret Sharp was John Flett's second wife. His first was Elspet Prott. John appeared regularly on the `Poor Money Distribution' list from 1746 until 1753. Son John married Jean Mackay in 1744 and probably left the area via Portessie. Daughter Anna seems not to have survived and is not counted here.

N9....Alex Flett was probably the son of John Flett and Margaret Sharp, rather than the son of James Flett and Margaret Cumming. He was last recorded in 1752 and may have been lost in the sea disaster of c.1754.

N10...Daughter Elspet was not recorded in subsequent records and probably did not survive.

N12...William Smith was the son of John Smith and Anna Steel at S15.

N13...Sons James and William and daughters Ann and Janet seemingly did not survive.

N14...Jean Forbes was the widow of William McBay who died in 1743.

N15...Anna Steel was last recorded in 1746 and husband John Smith, ordained as an elder in April 1753, last appears as a witness in December 1754. The child born in 1744 was unnamed in the baptismal record, and may not have survived. William Smith was recorded as a witness at Broadhyth 7 times between 1727 and 1750. He was called `elder' from 1746 to differentiate him from John Smith's son William, perhaps his nephew. Son Alex may have moved into the farming community. Anna's sister, Katherine Steel, was regularly recorded in the poors' money distribution lists. She died in September 1755 at Broadhyth.

N17...Alex McBay senior was recorded in 1751, and implied afterwards. None of the younger children appear in the later records and may not have survived or may have left the village.

N18...The family of Margaret Smith, the widow of the late Alex Forbes, who died in 1748 at Broadhyth. The indications are that the orphans left the village, and so are not counted here.

N19...Alex Flett from Burghead was the widower of Anna McKenzie who died in 1748. An older son, called Alexander, was born in 1732, but did not survive.

N20...John Luke was recorded regularly in Broadhyth as a witness from 1727 until 1755.

N22...James Sutherland witnessed at Broadhyth until 1761. Son Alex? seems not to have reached adulthood. Daughter Jean married widower John Mcbay in 1764.

N23...John Smith, a soldier, was temporarily in Broadhyth in 1746. His wife Margaret Murray was likeley from Buckie as was the witness at their son John's baptism. Because of the temporary nature of their residence, although recorded, they are not counted here.

N24...Margaret Watson was the widow of carpenter, John Nicol, who died in October 1741. The family seemed to have subsequently moved away.

N25...Anna Smith was the natural daughter of Alex Smith and Jean Sinclair but she does not seem to have stayed on in Findochty and probably moved after her mother died in 1737.

N26...Alex Campbell was the son of William Campbell and Janet Jappy and Jean Mcbay was the daughter of Alex Mcbay and Isabel Ross. Alex Campbell died before 1758 when Jean McBay married Alex Simpson and moved to Portessie.

N27...James Gordon was the son of Alex Gordon and Helen Cumming at S2.

N28...This family were probably farming at Netherton judging by their close involvement with both fisher and farming families, and so are not counted in the village population.

N29...Jean Forbes was a resident of Broadhyth in February 1752, when she married Alex Jamieson of Cairney parish, and so she is counted here.

N31...Alex Thain was the son of the deceased George Thain and Anne McKenzie at S4.
