Notes:

N1....Apart from William Anderson, S16, the other Anderson children of Helen Prott may have moved away from the village, possibly to PORTKN'KIE. Janet last witnessed in 1762 and John may be he who was in Cullen parish in 1768 and married Elspet Fraser of Rathven parish. The unnamed child was possibly Ann who married in 1778. There is no evidence for the existence of Janet's unnamed son, who possibly did not survive.

N2....John Gordon, born in Findochty in 1719 but is not heard of again until he was last recorded in 1768. He was the son of Alex Gordon and Helen Cumming.

N3....William Sutherland was the son of James Sutherland and Elspet Howie at S23, and Janet Sutherland was the daughter of widowed Mary Ogilvie and the late George Sutherland. 4 George Flett was the son of James Flett and Margaret Cumming at S13. Isabel McKenzie was the daughter of Kenneth McKenzie and Margaret Sinclair from Portessie.

N5....John Thain was recorded in 1766. Son James witnessed once in 1770.

N6....Alex Flett was the son of John Flett and Margaret Sharp at S8. Janet Mair probably came from PORTKN'KIE. No record later than 1763 has been found and the family possibly left the village, but within reach as son James married a Findochty girl in 1788.

N8....Margaret Sharp was the widow of John Flett. James Sutherland was the son of daughter Janet.

N9....John Sutherland was the son of James Sutherland and Elspet Howie, S23, and Anna Sutherland was the daughter of William Sutherland and Isabel McKenzie at S23. They left the village and were recorded in Knowhead in 1773, where their son Alex was born and so are not counted here. Anna may then have been widowed, returned to Findochty village and then married William Farquhar in 1780, subseqently moving to Portessie.

N10....Robert McCulloch witnessed up to 1776. Daughter Anna had married John Garden and moved to Portessie in 1762. Daughter Jean married William Reid in 1773 and Isabel married Alex Tain in 1776. 11 Alex Thain was the son of John Thain and Elspet Gordon at S5. Annie Riach probably came from Buckie.

N12....William Smith witnessed up to at least 1769. Margaret Wood witnessed up to 1787. Daughter Anne may not have survived.

N14....Jean Forbes was the widow of William McBay who died in 1743.

N15....John Smith, elder, last appears as a witness in December 1754 and is supposed dead by this date.

N16....William Anderson was the son of John Anderson and Helen Prott.

N17....William McCulloch was the son of Robert McCulloch and Elspet Sharp at S10. Helen Flett was the daughter of Alex Flett and the late Ann McKenzie, S20. Their marriage probably took place between 26.4.1765 and 12.4.1766, since the records for this period are missing from the OPR. 18 Janet Anderson was the widow of Alex McBay. The family seemed to have left the village before 1771.

N20....Alex Flett from Burghead was the widower of Anna McKenzie. Daughter Helen married James Smith,`Bodie' in 1762 and had moved to Portessie.

N21....Janet Innes was the widow of Alex McBay, younger, who suddenly disappears from the records and may have been lost c1754. Janet may have moved to PORTKN'KIE afterwards.

N22....Daughter Margaret married William McKenzie in 1772 and moved to Portessie. Daughter Isabel may not have survived, but counted. 23 James Sutherland witnessed at Broadhyth until 1761. Daughter Margaret was possibly she who married James Geddes in Buckie in 1764.

N24....John Sutherland was the son of William Sutherland and Isabel McKenzie at S22. Jean Flett was the daughter of James Flett and Margaret Cumming at S13. The eldest Helen must have died very young. 25 William Flett was the son of John Flett and Margaret Sharp at S8. He last witnessed in 1764 and it seems that this family left the village.

N27....Son John it seems died in his teens, and daughter Anne may not have survived.

N28....Daughter Anne and son James seemingly did not survive.

N29....James Campbell may well have been James Anderson, son of John Anderson and Helen Prott. He possibly changed his name to Campbell after his widowed mother, (S1), married William Campbell. Anna Flett was the daughter of Alex Flett and the deceased Anna McKenzie, (S20).

N30....John Mcbay had previously been married to Margaret Findlay. Jean Sutherland was the daughter of James Sutherland and Elspet Howie at S23. Alex and Jean Mcbay, children of the earlier marriage seemed to have left the village in the 1770s.

N31....Alex Kinnaird and Helen Sutherland may have been married during the lapse in the OPR marriage records, 1758-1761. They do not seem to have remained long in the village. The assumption here is that Helen Sutherland was the widow of Alex Flett who seems to have died around the mid 1750s.
