Notes:

N1....John Campbell was the son of William Campbell and Helen Prott, one-time residents in Findochty. Janet Garden was the daughter of Alex Garden and Jean Smith in Portessie.

N2....John Gordon, last recorded in 1768, and was possibly dead by 1781.

N3....William Sutherland was the son of James Sutherland and Elspet Howie at S23, and Janet Sutherland was the daughter of widowed Mary Ogilvie and the late George Sutherland.

N4....George Flett was the son of James Flett and Margaret Cumming at S13. Isabel McKenzie was the daughter of Kenneth McKenzie and Margaret Sinclair from Portessie.

N5....John Thain was recorded in 1766. Son James witnessed once in 1770, but it seems that this family seems to have left the village before 1781.

N6....John Thain was the son of Alex Thain and Elspet Adamson at S19. Jean Slater was an incomer

N7....Daughter Margaret Witnessed in 1778.

N8....Margaret Sharp was the widow of John Flett.

N9....John Sutherland was the son of James Sutherland and Elspet Howie, S23, and Anna Sutherland was the daughter of William Sutherland and Isabel McKenzie at S23. They left the village and were recorded at the Shore of Buckie in 1770 and then at Knowhead in 1773, and so are not counted here. Anne may have been widowed and married William Farquhar of Portessie in 1776.

N10...Robert McCulloch witnessed up to 1776. Daughter Jean and her husband William Reid lived on Findochty and likely fell heir to Jean's parents' house.

N11...Alex Thain was the son of John Thain and Elspet Gordon at S5. Annie Riach probably came from Buckie.

N12...William Smith witnessed up to at least 1769. Daughter Anne may be she who married John Thomson in 1779, and left the village.

N13...Margaret Cumming was the widow of James Flett, one of the original Flett migrants who is assumed to be dead by now.

N14...Jean Forbes was the widow of William McBay who died in 1743. She may not have survived to this date.

N15...James Flett was the son of James Flett and Catherine Calder at S26. Jean Prott may have been a relative as James's grandmother was a Elspet Prott.

N16...Son John may not have survived.

N17...The older Helen clearly did not survive.

N18...James Wilson and Elspet Smith farmed at Westertown and are not counted in the population of the village.

N19...Helen Thain married Charles Mackay of Portessie in 1780 and moved to that village.

N20...Alex Flett from Burghead was the widower of Anna McKenzie. Daughter Helen married James Smith,`Bodie' in 1762 and had moved to Portessie.

N21...Alex Thain was the son of Alex Thain and Elizabth Adamson at S19. Isabel McCulloch was the daughter of Robert McCulloch and Elspet Sharp at S10.

N22...Daughter Margaret married William McKenzie in 1772 and moved to Portessie.

N23...Elspet Howie was the widow of James Sutherland, presumed dead by this time.

N24...John Sutherland was the son of William Sutherland and Isabel McKenzie at S22. Jean Flett was the daughter of James Flett and Margaret Cumming at S13. The elder Helen must have died very young.

N25...John Smith was the son of William Smith and Margaret Wood at S12. Barbara Flett has not been identified.

N26...A daughter Elspet, who probably belonged in this family, married Alex Clark of Portessie in 1777, and settled there.

N27...An older son, John, did not survive and died before 1773.

N28...Two older sons both called James died. Son Alex married Margaret Clark from Glasterim in 1780 and left the village seemingly. Son William seemingly did not survive.

N29...James Campbell may well have been James Anderson, son of John Anderson and Helen Prott. He possibly changed his name to Campbell after his widowed mother married William Campbell, see N1. Anna Flett was the daughter of Alex Flett and the deceased Anna McKenzie, (S20). Daughter Jean married Alex McKenzie of Portessie and moved there in 1778. Older son James clearly did not survive.

N30...John McBay had previously been married to Margaret Findlay. Jean Sutherland was the daughter of James Sutherland and Elspet Howie at S23.

N31...Marriage entry gives Janet Forbes while daughter Anne's baptism gives Anne. Janet is probably correct. Nothing more was reorded on this family and they may have moved away.

N32...Janet Innes was the widow of Alex McBay, Younger.

N33...William Smith was the son of William Smith and Margaret Wood, S12; Anna Smith was the daughter of John Smith and Elspet Flett, S7.

N34...John Strachan and Isobel Stables farmed at Netherton farm near Findochty village. Their family is recorded here but not counted. They seem to have left this farm in the 1780s.
