Ode to Charles and Others
Linda V. H. Gordon
2000
I min' o' a lad--a school freen o' mine
I kent him quite weel in days lang syne.
His locks they were black
His face it was handsome.
The quines thocht him worth `The Auld King's ransom'
He liked the quines, they liked him tae.
I dinna think he ever fancied me!
Oor days were guid & aften sunny
Helen & I found maist things funny.
We laughed at life & as a rule
Didna baither much wi work & school.
We left oor pals tae continue their studies
We got jobs & were guid dancin' buddies.
Time went by we kinna lost touch
But heard noo & then fa's wi' such & such.
Charles mairrit Sheena & settled doon
She travelled tae the East wi that Slochie loon.
The years rolled on till 98
Fan `Glory be' we hid a date
Tae the Marine we a' went for a gran' get the gither,
Oor evenin' was great apart from the wither.
They cam frae the North & they came frae the Sooth
One even came on crutches & that's the God's truth.
Frae the States they flew in, leavin' sunny CA
An frae far flung Alaska they made their way
I think of our school freens nae longer here,
Count blessings a plenty & folks who are dear.
The Re-union has prospered, I'm happy to say,
Freenship as aye...has again won the day.
