What are we trying to do here?

We should be able to feed our little ones anywhere we like, but some mums (and some babies!) prefer somewhere quiet and more private. Newcastle Breastfeeding Resource aims to help such mums find somewhere friendly and supportive of their breastfeeding. Maybe you want somewhere private, or maybe you just want to know where you could have a nice feed - hopefully we can help.

Although the project is an endeavour of a particular individual, the term "we" is used to reflect that most of our information is collected by local mums. The experience of many women goes into this webpage.

Writing "we should be able to feed our little ones anywhere we like" suggests that there might be some places where breastfeeding is not OK - although it isn't illegal to breastfeed in public in this country, there will be places (hopefully relatively few) where breastfeeding isn't received as well as we'd like - hopefully mums will feel strong enough to stand up for what they believe in, but perhaps some won't - in the face of hostility, and looking after an infant, it can be daunting to find yourself unwelcome. Breastfeeding needs to be a protected right: in Scotland it's illegal to ask a breastfeeding woman to stop - how long before the entire UK adopts this standpoint?

The Breastfeeding Manifesto encompasses many vital issues in making breastfeeding unquestionably acceptable: put your name on the petition. Only when we re-educate a country will we be making progress towards the accepting, tolerant, forward-thinking, nurturing society we could be.

Some breastmilk is better than no breastmilk - so if it's mixed feeding or no breastmilk at all, keep up the mixed feeding! The more breastmilk your baby receives, the better, but we don't want to discriminate against mums who use formula as well.

Not only is breastfeeding healthy (for mum and baby), free and convenient, it is the single most natural way to bond with your baby: suckle the world with liquid love!

The world would be a happier place if more babies were breastfed: put down your guns and pick up your babies!
