The Robin Hood Musical

Ballad of Robin & the Curtal Friar

This curtal friar lived in Fountains Dale,
Who ev'ryone said could draw a longbow.
Robin Hood curious to know,
Took his sword and longbow
And found this Fountains Dale.
This friar was by the river side,
He said to him: 'A good man you'll be
If you will just carry me across
This wide water for your sweet charity.'
When they reached the far side,
The friar then drew his sword,
And he said to Robin: 'Now carry me over.'

So Robin bore him to the far side
Where he drew his sword and said to him,
Now you carry me over.
When they were mid river
The friar dropped him in
And said: 'Now choose whether sink or swim!'
Both drew their swords and fought might and main,
From morn into afternoon.
Till Robin got too tired and sank down to his knees.
He then begged for a boon:
'Good friar give me your leave,
So I can blow my horn for I'm worn and forlorn.'

Through the forest Robin blew blasts three.
Two score yeomen dressed in Lincoln green
All armed with their bent longbows
Came ranging o'er the lea.
The friar said: 'What's this?'
Rob-in said: 'If you leave Fountains Dale
Free each Sunday  and on holy days
Go to Nottingham with me,
A noble will be your fee
And changed garments are free.'
It had been eight long years, some said it was even more,
that no knight, earl, or lord, could make him yield be-fore.
