Boleskine win British legion Cup
British Legion Cup – Under 12’s Shinty League Competion, Final Round at Drumnadrochit, Saturday 3 May 2008
The final round of league matches in the British Legion Cup Competition resulted in a momentous and most memorable day for the Boleskine Under 12 shinty team as they lifted the trophy after a nail-biting climax to the competition.
At the start of the day Boleskine were at top of the league table by just one point. Considering the stiff competition provided by the opposition – and the fact that Boleskine played all their games away from home – this proved just how well the team had done over the previous three Saturdays. Three games altogether were played today:-
Boleskine 1 – Strathglass ‘A’ 0
This was a hard and keenly fought contest between two sides who knew they were in with a chance of doing well in the competition. Our defence battled away tenaciously with Fionnlagh Coll performing well in goal, keeping a clean sheet, and Neil Hope clearing up everything at the back with some incredible last-ditch tackles and forward-moving play. Up front Reuben Smith was keen to get the all-important first goal. However, after a neck-and-neck struggle between two determined teams, the winning goal was scored with a fabulous diagonal strike from Connor MacIntyre through a crowded goalmouth.
Strathglass ‘B’ 1 – Boleskine 0
It was now clear that – in their last game of the competition – Boleskine needed only one point to win the trophy. However a well-struck long range effort from the opposition was the only goal of the game. Boleskine fought hard and played well but in vain. Despite the disappointment, all was not entirely lost.
We now needed a result from the next (and final) game – between two other teams – to go our way in order to allow our boys a chance to play in a play-off for the winner’s spot. The next match was anxiously watched from the sidelines by the Boleskine lads (alongside some very nervous and exceptionally vocal parents). And sure enough, the score went our way, leaving both Glen Urquhart ‘A’ and Boleskine with 14 points each. The stage was now set for a grand finale – with the winner taking all.
Boleskine 2 – Glen Urquhart ‘A’ 1
The first half started off by living up to the same high standards already set by the team. The defence were doing a fine job of keeping the opposition at bay. Kieran Docherty, Connor MacIntyre and Donnie Forbes continued to dominate the middle of the pitch with fine passing movements up to the Glen Urquhart goal. Eventually, following impressive teamwork, Hamish Stoddart scored with a scorching shot from 10yards out. The parents were going wild at this stage. However, Glen Urquhart were also desperate to win the Cup and their excellent play and teamwork eventually paid-off with a deserved equaliser just before half-time. The tension was mounting as both teams battled hard for that all-important winning goal. And eventually it did come – for Boleskine! A long through ball from Donnie Forbes was followed up by Hamish Stoddart to power home the winner. Owen Hope came on as sub to supplement the attack as the team sought to keep the pressure on Glen Urquhart. At last the final whistle went. Boleskine had won the game and won the British Legion Cup.!
What a day. What a result. Well done to all the boys who have played in this competition!! And, in particular, well done to the excellent management team of Ian and Wendy Hope!! You’ve all done us proud.
We look forward to seeing the name ‘Boleskine’ engraved on the silverware as British Legion Cup Winners 2008.
British Legion Cup at Drumnadrochit 26.04.08
A confident Boleskine side travelled down to Drum for a six a side tournament (round 3).
Glen Urquhart’A’2-0 Boleskine
We met up with Glen Urquhart ‘A’ side. Boleskine, just finding their feet, lost 2-0 with an injured goalie…unlucky
Glen Urquhart’B’ 0-2 Boleskine.
Boleskine knew that they had to win because they lost the last game. Boleskine played well and Hamish Stoddart made a few chances. First goal came from Donnie Forbes, a tap in from 8 yards, he scored again after Fionnlagh Call took a long range ball and was unlucky not to score himself.
Balnain 0-1 Boleskine
Boleskine had to win this match since two weeks ago they were beaten by this team. Boleskine were playing the best team in the tournament by far. Balnain were the faster team but Boleskine got a lucky break when Donnie Forbes charged the keeper and scored.
WELL DONE BOLESKINE ALL THE BEST FOR NEXT WEEK AT DRUMNADROCHIT 3.5.08
British Legion Cup Cannich 19 April 2008
A very confident Boleskine side traveled up to Cannich to play Strathglass ‘A’ and Strathglass ’B’ teams.
Strathglass ‘A’ (0) VS (1) Boleskine
The game started off with an early goal from Fionnlaigh Call. The defence did well to keep Strathglass ‘A’ out.
Strathglass ‘B’ (0) VS (3) Boleskine
Connor Macintyre scored a goal but it was disallowed. This made the team more determined to score. Connor later scored the goal he deserved. Keiren also scored with a long range effort from behind the half way line. Rueben Smith played well but was substituted by Donnie Forbes who scored the 3rd goal.
WELL DONE!!!!!
Team: Matthew James, Neil Hope, Keiran Docherty, Connor MacIntyre, Reuben Smith, Donnie Forbes and Fionnlaigh Call.
Thanks to Wendy and Ian Hope and also all the players from the other teams

British Legion Cup at Drumnadrochit
Boleskine Under-12 traveled side to Drumnadrochit for a six a side tournament on Saturday morning, 12th April 2008. The three other teams playing were Balnain, Glenurquhart ‘A’ and Glenurquhart ‘B’
Balnain 1 – Boleskine 0
Boleskine’s first game was against Balnain. We fought hard but lost narrowly. Owen Hope had a few chances but was unlucky not to score but Balnain managed to get a goal against an unfortunate Boleskine side.
Glen Urquhart ‘A’ 0 – Boleskine 2
Things looked brighter against the home side, Glen Urquhart ‘A’, team when it came to the second game . It started off when Connor Macintyre hit a lovely ball up to Donnie Forbes who failed to score .The chances kept on coming but the two forwards were unlucky not to score . Finally, after a scramble in the box Donnie Forbes scored. Keiran Docherty who, along with Connor MacIntyre, was playing his first game, made a blistering run down the wing and a short pass to Donnie Forbes allowed him to slot it home. Matthew James (in goal) and Neil Hope (in defence), were as solid as a rock at the back. The game finished 2-0 to a very strong Boleskine side.
Glen Urquhart ‘B’ 0 – Boleskine 3
Boleskine couldn’t afford to relax though – we needed a win from our last game. This game was aginst Glen Urqhuart ‘B’ team. Boleskine made a tactical change by putting Donnie Forbes in centre and Connor MacIntyre up front. Neil Hope (who was playing boys twice his size) played terrific. Keiran Docherty was desperate to score so he kept on running down the wing but was unlucky not to score the goals he deserved for his efforts. Donnie Forbes got the first two goals and Connor MacIntyre wrapped it up to make it 0-3. A tired Boleskine did well in the very cold and very wet weather.
TEAM: Matthew James, Neil Hope, Keiran Docherty, Connor MacIntyre, Owen Hope, Donnie Forbes
Thank’s to Iain Hope and well done to the team .
ALL THE BEST AT CANNICH NEXT WEEK (Saturday 19th April 2008).
