The Club, formed in the year 2000 would like to build an outdoor short mat facility. Chinnor is a large village of some 7000 plus residents with more housing promised in the future.

Our aim is to broaden the range of sporting facilities available

Bowls provides opportunities to return people to active lifestyles by increasing participation in sport and other physical activity and promotes health and well being.

By encouraging youth to participate, we hope to tackle vandalism, anti-social behaviour and environmental crime.

Our objectives are:

To provide quality community outdoor short mat bowls for the people of Chinnor, South Oxfordshire and its environs, particularly to encourage youth into the sport of bowls.

By:

Building an outdoor short mat facility.

Running  weekly short mat bowls sessions.

Establish links with local Schools, Scouts, Youth Groups and U3A Groups.

Delivering a promotional programme of training and coaching in conjunction with both County and National Associations.

Encourage the people of Chinnor to participate in the future development of the Club to ensure its future.

PLEASE CAN YOU HELP US ??

We need to raise £40,000 in order to make this project a reality. We have raised approximately £6000 through our own efforts, and we have the promise of a further £10,000 by way of a grant. We are applying for other Grants from various sporting bodies and local organisations. Many people have been extremely generous, but we still need to raise more.

For the benefit of anyone who is not familiar with the sport, Short Mat Bowls is a “Compact” version of normal lawn green bowls using the same size woods and jack. The major difference is that it is played on a mat 6 ft wide by 45ft long but requires the same element of skill. An outdoor Short Mat facility in Chinnor would be available to all members of the community and it is hoped that links with local schools will encourage younger players to learn the sport.

If you would like to help with this project or would care to make a donation, please contact us at:

This is a picture of a similar facility belonging to Holmer Green Short Mat Bowls Club. We often play on these mats and thoroughly enjoy the experience of playing our particular sport in an outdoor environment.

We would like to thank them for their help and assistance in enabling us to begin our project.

Outdoor Shortmat Bowls facility
Regretably, this project has fallen through, due to lack of funding. Despite the best efforts of the Club, and the support of the Parish Council, insufficient funds were raised to meet the ever increasing costs involved.
We still have planning permission on two sites in the village and if miracles do happen, and a wealthy benefactor comes to our rescue, then we can proceed with this much sought after facility. Until then we just have to thank all those people who believed in the project and who put in a great deal of time and effort to raise money and the profile of the club.
