History
1932 to Present
The Association was formed in 1932 when a group of six clubs met. The founder
clubs were: Shrewsbury, Wellington, Oswestry Victoria, Oswestry, Shifnal and
Coalbrookdale (with support from Church Stretton and Albrighton).
Shropshire competed in the Inter-County Championships until 1938 but without
any notable success. Following the war time period in abeyance, the Association
was revived on January 31st 1951 and a tournament was played a few weeks later.
This proved to be so successful that it became the first Annual Tournament
and has continued ever since. The perpetual challenge trophies were presented
to the Association by the clubs whose names they bear.
Shropshire again entered teams to the Inter-County Championships and in season
1957/58 entered a second team. Old records indicate that regular proposals
were made to instigate an inter-club league and this was finally accomplished
in 1959. The leagues have continued to the present day and now consist of
Mens, Ladies and Mixed divisions.
There
are Ladies, Mens and Mixed leagues with many divisions
to cater for a wide range of playing standards, from beginners to County level
and from all age groups.
Shropshire also has three teams in the I.C.C Veterans League and an active tournament circuit (please see the County News page for more details).
