Delicate wild flowers are not the images that immediately spring to mind when thinking of the freezing conditions of the Crimean War. But this was the inspiration behind A Soldier’s Tunic.

Many letters sent home by soldiers engaged in the war contained violets, picked and pressed at Balaclava, and poignantly refer to their incongruous abundance on the battlefield. A perfect symbol for the love and loss of war. And the trigger to aim for a beautiful film, but a tough one - the strength of love over convention and how the act of killing shapes and effects a man.

Katherine Cranborn, daughter of a wealthy landowner,
is fiercely independent and modern in her thought.

Her father, and convention, expect a marriage to renowned marksman, Dedrick Hulbert.

But Katherine and cavalryman John Rayverne are already desperately and secretly in love.

When Hulbert discovers their rendezvous he challenges John to a duel. A contest John cannot possibly win.

Hulbert will withdraw on one condition; Katherine must agree to marry him.
