Depression & Anxiety

Massage therapy is believed to be helpful for people with depression or anxiety, although further studies are needed to conclusively prove this.

Massage produces chemical changes in the brain that result in a feeling of relaxation, calm and well-being. It also reduces levels of stress hormones - such as adrenalin, cortisol and norepinephrine - which in some people can trigger depression.

It should be noted that the more biological types of depression (melancholic and psychotic depression) are very unlikely to respond to massage alone although it can be a valuable adjunct to anti-depressants or psychological treatments.
