Welcome to Arthog
Whether you are looking for professional engineering services, are a steam enthusiast or you are “just visiting” we hope you enjoy our site and find it interesting and informative.
This page is by way of an introduction. For more detailed information follow the links above.
Arthog is a village located on the south shore of the Afon Mawddach between Dolgellau and Fairbourne. As you enter the village you come upon Yr Hen Ysgol (the old school) which is the home of David and Ritta Black and Aveling Porter Road Roller XD 8230. This idyllic setting is at first sight an unusual location to find a vintage road roller. However she blends perfectly with the surrounding and can be often be seen trundling about the highways and byways for business or pleasure. See the HISTORY link to learn more about the fascinating history of XD 8230.
Life in Arthog is very much tied up with what the area can offer. Home grown fruit and vegetables enrich our table. We also take full advantage of the bounty nature offers in the differing seasons. You should try our home made crab apple jelly and sloe gin! Click the How to find us link above so you can locate this tranquil part of North Wales.
David is well respected in the narrow/miniature gauge railway world, being a long standing member of the Heywood Society. David's engineering background, combined with experience on a number of railways, enables him to carry out a variety of free lance locomotive engineering work to keep your locomotive on the rails or road. This can be done in the workshop at Arthog or on a visiting basis. He has undertaken full overhauls of a number of miniature locomotives of many gauges including a 15" Cagney rescued from Peru. See our ENGINEERING SERVICES page for further details.
Ritta, when not helping at the local whole food coop or tending the vegetable plot, is not afraid to lend a hand when the roller is out and about, often taking turn at the wheel and of course cleaning.engineering_services.htmlshapeimage_2_link_0
