Camps

Air cadets are able to partake in camps on Royal Air Force establishments. The most major camp of the year is Summer camp at an RAF base during the summer holidays. There is also a similar camp during the Easter break from school. While both these camps are organised at Wing level a large number of camps are also organised at squadron level. For example Slough squadron frequently goes to RAF Lyneham in Wiltshire to spend a weekend.

A typical camp on an RAF base will involve visits to sections such as Air Traffic Control; the RAF Police (and their dogs!); as well as any other sections, which are specific to that station. For exmaple when visiting RAF Lyneham we have visited the UK Mobile Air Movements Squadron and the Tactical Medical Wing. Also, on many stations, there may be a chance to either fly in the Tutor aircraft or in another RAF aircraft, including transport aircraft and helicopters. Cadets may also have the chance to take part in work experience on the base. All meals are eaten in the Junior Ranks mess, next to serving RAF personnel.

During an annual camp every cadet (weather permitting) has a flight in the RAF Tutor aircraft, in addition to the opportunity to fly in a variety of RAF aircraft at the station they are visitng.

Some camps also take place overseas in RAF establishments such as RAF Akrotori in Cyprus and RAF Gibraltar.

There are also a variety of other camps available covering different aspects of the Corps, focused around the fieldcraft and adventure training aspect of the corps, and offering different opportunities to cadets.

This year cadets from Slough visited RAF Marham, read about it here.
