The Duke of Edinburgh's award is nationally recognised scheme, it involves four parts: the expedition, community service, physical activity, and a skill. The award can be undertaken at three levels; bronze, silver and gold.
The expedition lasts 2 days and one night for bronze; three days and two nights for silver; and four days and three nights for gold. As the awards progress the terrain on which the expedition is undertaken becomes progressively more challenging. the expedition may be undertaken on foot, on horseback, by canoe or by bicycle.
