Sound Tapes

Over the last few years more and more interest as been growing in old or vintage sound tapes. At the forefront of this trend as been the Canadian collector Dave Brown. Who probably has the largest collection of sound tapes in the world. Dave’s been collecting sound system tapes now for over twenty years. His main area of interest is Jah Love with coming up to 400 tapes from that sound alone, but also in his collection are massive amount of tapes from Jamaican sound systems like Stur Gav, Youth Promotion, Black Scorpio, Kilamanjaro, Stur Mars, Gemini, Stereophonic, Jack Ruby, King Jammys,. In fact virtually every sound system in Jamaica and beyond. More importantly Dave is interested in sharing his collection with the world. He is trading, not selling sound system tapes. And if you don’t have a tape to trade he’ll work out something. It was Dave Brown who made available the King Tubby sound system tape a couple of years ago. (The oldest sound system tape known to exist). Please write to him at:

 Sound Tape Reviews March 2001

Jack Ruby - Montego Bay - St James - 1981

Bobby Culture, Yellowman, Nicodemus, Icho Candy. Selectors - Fat Jaw & Bonito.

Lawrence Lindo, better known as Jack Ruby, operated his sound system out of 1 Music Avenue in Ocho Rios. It often drew the big name deejays such as U.Brown and Brigadier Jerry, to his North Coast HQ. The big 'Supa' featured here are Nicodemus and Yellowman, but first its the lyrical skills of a Ruby regular, the late Bobby Culture, which are highlighted over the massive 'Gunman' rhythm. Dual selectors for this Montego Bay dance are Fat Jaw and Bonito, and they feature Sammy Dread tunes heavily. Over the 'Guiding Star' rhyhthm Bobby chats constructively, before Yellowman, a big star on the rise, asks for guidance from Jah. However it's the 'Yellow Fellow's' slackness lyrics which really fires up the Mo'Bat crowd. Cultural dancehall singer Icho Candy gives praises to Selassie in a rare dancehall appearance. Another top deejay of the day was 'Mr Fabulous' Nicodemus. His rough voiced rhyhtming, as featured on his 'Willie Red' storyline, always went down well in the dance. This tape is a good example of why the jack Ruby sound was probably the best known sound system based outside of Kingston.

Ray Symbolic 82 Chisholm Avenue, Kingston 1980

Ranking Joe, Lue Lepkie - Selector Jah Screw

The deejay/selector combination of Ranking Joe and Jah Screw were at their peak around the late seventies and early eighties. Firstly with the original King Sturgav and, as featured here, with the Ray Symbolic sound. Ranking Joe 'steps it in a Chisholm Ave.' displaying his trademark quick talking style, as Jah Screw draws musical selections from the likes of Barrington Levy, Horace Andy and in particular Sugar Minott. Dollars is the topic for his 'Money Man Skank' and he warns about 'Fussing And Fighting' over Sugar's 'Jah Shakey' cut 'Jah Jah Children'. Towards the end of this rare tape, frequent dancehall perfomer Lui Lepki joins the proceedings urging 'Jah Children' to unite. Not long after this session Ray Symbolic, with Screw and Joe became the first JA sound to tour England in August 1980. The three month stay was a great success but tragically in November, shortly after the return to Jamaica, the owner Ray Symbolic was killed in a Kingston car crash.

Metromedia - Tivoli Gardens, Kingston - July 1982

Peter Metro, Massive Dread, Zuzu, Papa Richie, Papa Wayne. Selector Sky Juice.

<P>Around the turn of the 80's the Metromedia sound was building a good reputation on the dancehall circuit. The main reason for their popularity was probably down to the presence of charismatic deejay Peter Metro. For his dance in Tivoli Gardens in Western Kingston, Sky Juice is at the controls, as he still is today, and it's the 'Unmetered Taxi' riddim which drives Metro's connection lyrics. He's joined by the late Massive Dread, who's bubbling style was a dancehall favourite. Here he flashes his 'National Heroes' lyrics along with the hit song 'This Is Massive' Papa's Wayne and Ritchie om combiantion, trade girl lyrics and comment on the 1982 Brazilian Football Team. But it's Peter 'Pedro' Metro who shines brightest here often chatting and singing 'en espanol' at length. At he righly ssay' Jamaica Proud A Me' Metromedia's status continued to grow over they years, and although mainly a juggling sound now, Sky Juice is rated as one of the world's best selectors.

Arrows

– Whitfield Town, Kingston, Oct, 1982

Shaka Shamba, Matta Pang, Ugliman, Stanley Braveman, Liberty, Gillipriest, Captain Sinbad, Lady Anne.

Selectors – Ricky, Stagger.

Here we have an early 80’s session from Arrows sound system. This tape, recorded in Chisholm Avenue, features a number of not se well known deejays such as Shaka Shamba from St.Thomas and his sparring partner Liberty. This pair really nice up the dance over some pounding Roots Radics versions. They keep the lyrics flowing and eventually Captain Sinbad steps up to the mic to give the ‘Bam Salute’. Ugliman & Gillipreist are present and Stanley Braveman urges the crowd to follow the Arrows sound. This session is a good example of a sound that was to grow in popularity during the early 80’s.

Bonafide Love

- Dalvey, St.Thomas - March 1998

Daddy Shark, Rhinestone, Bruk Back, Junior Cat, Marshall, Brigadier Jerry, Sister Nancy. Selector Mikey Dread.

Former London sound, Bonafide Love have relocated to Temple Hall in the parish of St.Thomas. This dance, as a tribute to a Twelve Tribes brother, has some big names in attendance, with some flying in from America. Mikey Dread's ragga selection precedes showtime, which starts with Daddy Shark - brother to Josey Wales, and Junior Cat with his fast talking rude boy chat over the original 'Punany;' riddim. Back from foreign after eleven years in Bruk Back, and under recorded veteran from days of Black Star alongside Tiger. In his many cultural lyrics he asks what kind of world we're living in. Enter Brigadier Jerry and his sister 'Muma' Nancy, a foundation female deejay for over two decades, to pay their musical respects over some familiar Studio One rhythms. This session contains plenty of excellent roots and culture in the dance.

Caveman

– February 1998 – with: Sizzla, Half Pint, Junior Reid, and Junior Demus. A youth sound it may be, but if it can put together the talent present on this tape on a regular basis, and continue to generate the excitement found here as well, it’s going to be around for a long time. Sizzla fans will love it of course, although Junior Reid’s monologue is very memorable.

/////////////////////////////////////////

Caveman

- Windsor Lawn: St Anns Bay, April 1999

Luciano, Mikey General, Bushman, Barry Brown & Ken Serious. Selectors - Iniman, Dr.Cave, Iron. Leading sound Caveman HiFi captured live in St Anns and feature here a quartet of roots vocalists. The evening starts with typical cultural juggling with Nuff Sizzla and Carleton in the mix as well as good specials from Freddie McGregor, Lone Ranger, who adapts his 'Love Bump' and a Ninjaman tune which has the crowd roaring. Star time arrives with Luciano blessing the house with a passage from Revelations before launching into a great acappella of 'Final Call' with his brethren Mikey General on harmonies. Mikey himself touched down on the massive 'Sinners' and 'Babylon Cake' on the Xterminator 'Stealing' rhythm. Luciano's own 'Ulterior Motive' quickly follows and they are joined by Bushman, whose brief cameo included 'River Jordan'. S surprise appearance from long time singer Barry Brown, who delivers his seminal 'Far East' with its message of tribal war killings still relevant twenty years on. 'Not So Lucky' and 'Give Love' are delivered over Studio One dubs and then roots deejay Ken Serious rocks the place with some biblical lyrics. It's to Caveman's credit that they are on the few sounds that regularly promote live roots performers.

/////////////////////////////////////////

Caveman

- Racecourse - Clarendon - 3rd April 1999

Sizzla, Capleton, Yaggaroo, Jah Mason - Selector: Iniman.

The town of Racecourse is the venue for this top roots session and Caveman Hifi have brought together the leading Bobo Ashanti entertainers, the August Town dreads, Sizzla Kalonjie and Carleton 'The Prophet'. The latter, currently in unstoppable form, revisits one of his earliest hits 'Bumbo Red' as well as an early airing of his 'High Grade' wee lyrics. It's not just traditional riddim tracks that these artists ride. They are equally at home on the bashment riddims, such as the 'Badda Badda'. Sizzla showcases 'A Wah Dat' from his 'Royal Son Of Ethiopia' and hails the hard working farmer man oh 'Till It Some More'. Jah Mason the singjay cousin of Tony Rebel, makes an appearance and blesses all the black princesses. These Bobo youths are lyrical brimstone and fire, directing their venom at Babylon and all it's temptations. Throughout this fine Caveman tape, Sizzla and Capleton's religious convictions and black pride shine bright.

Jack Ruby - Montego Bay, St James 1981.

Bobby Culture, Yellowman, Nicodemus, Icho Candy. Selectors: Fat Jaw & Bonito Lawrence Lindo, better known as Jack Ruby, operated his sound system out of 1 Muzik Avenue in Ocho Rios. It often drew the big name deejays, such as U.Brown and Brigadier Jerry, to his North Coast HQ. The big 'supas' featured here are Nicodemus and Yellowman, but first it's the lyrical skills of a Ruby regular, the late Bobby Culture, which are highlighted over the massive 'Gunman' rhythm. Dual selectors for this Montego Bay dance are Fat Jaw and Bonito, and they feature Sammy Dread tunes heavily. Over the 'Guiding Star' rhythm Bobby chats constructively, before Yellowman, a big star on the rise, asks for guidance from Jah. However it's the 'Yellow Fellow's slackness lyrics which really fires up the Mo Bay crowd. Cultural dancehall singer Icho Candy gives praises to Selassic in a rare dancehall appearance. Another top deejay of the day was 'Mr Fabulous' Nicodemus. His rough voiced rhyming, as featured on his 'Willie Red' storyline, always went don well in the dance. This tape is a good example of why the Jack Ruby sound was probably the known sound system based outside of Kingston.

Jack Ruby – Ocho Rios – 1985 – Selector: Fat Jaw.

with Tiger, Bruk Back, Pompido, John Wayne, Junior Demus, Jah Mikey, Prezident ‘Slim’ Brown;1 Music Avenue was the north coast home of the late Jack Ruby. In this 1985 session Fat Jzw selects tunes from the likes of Tenor Saw, Nitty Gritty and Half Pint whilst a posse of gravel voiced DJ’s such as Pompido, John Wayne, and Junior Demus entertain the crowd. There are good performances from President ‘ Slim’ Brown, the underated General Jah Mikey and Bruk Back. But the real star of this tape is Tiger who excels here , really showing his skills on the mic to full effect. Skills that would make him a rough ranking star of the future.

Jah Love - At 1 Muzik Avenue - 1998, with :

U.Brown, Briggy, Puddy Roots, Grundy, Jeremiah and Little John. A lot of sound system follow fashion, slackness, specials – you name it. Jah Love just play great music, and bring out some of the best performances. Does anyone know who the singer who sounds like Garnett Silk is at the start of this tape.

//////////////////

Jah Love - Relxdale, Toronto, Canada - 29th May 1999.

Jeremiah, Josey Wales, Briggy, Selector - Belcher. The familiar signature tune of Yabby U's 'Warn The Nation' welcomes the Toronto crowd to the touring Jah Love sound. Starting the session is Jeremiah who regularly handles the earlies, alongside Belcher at the controls. Sadly this was to be one of Belcher's final sessions as he passed away shortly after they returned to Jamaica. The Natural Ites - 'Picture On The Wall', with it's triumphant horn section, starts the orthodox selection which ranges from original Ras Michael 'New Name' to ARP's 'Temple Of The Lord'. After an hour Jeremiah hands over to Josey Wales and Brigadier Jerry, who warns of the Babylon in 'Jah Jah See Dem A Come' before 'Riding West' to buy a pound of sese. Josey's lyrics are always full of humour and he remember Jamaica in'Nah Lef Ya' and the Higgins Town shooting in 'Bush Whacked'. This tape is only a snapshot of the whole show as it runs out far too quickly and although you'll hear far better Jah Love tapes out their, this is still an enjoyable sound tape.

Jah Youth is one of the premier cultural sounds. Known as the 'Roots Ambassadors' they have carried their message over the years around the UK, Europe, and Africa. This quality recording captures the 'Rastaman Sound' in Brixton. Contemporary roots

music, both UK and Jamaican are foremost in Locks Lee Irie and Youth Selectors. The Twinkle Brothers classic original 'Rasta Pon Top' is joined by recent recuts of Della Grant and Little Roy. And extended 'Flash' 7" pre selection includes Jah Cure's 'Never Die Like a Fool' and 'Revolution' over an updated 'Tonight' riddim with matching versions from Cocoa Tea and Yami Bolo. UK roots is well represented by Dub Judah, Dawna Lee and Jah Youth's stable of talented deejay/chanters and singers promote Rastafari and the Kings music to the max.

Prince Jammys - Kingston, Circa 1975

Carly - Operator: Prince Jammy.

Lloyd James better known in the seventies as Prince Jammys returned to Jamaica in 1975 after residing in Canada for a number of years. This vintage tape features Carly (as far as I can make out), one of Jammy's earliest deejays and he's a firm disciple of U.Roy. Like almost all of these early dancehall cassettes they were tapes from the crowd and not through the amps. The sound quality of this recording, although atmospheric, is often distorted particularly when the bass is pounding. A couple of Treasure Isle dubs, including the popular 'Travelling Man' by The Techniques, leads into The Gladiators Studio One cut of Roots Natty, which is announced as brand new. A Burning Spear selection follows with 'Old Marcus Garvey' and 'The Invasion' on which Carly reminds the crowd to humble themselves. U.Brown must have also been present as Carly tells him to report to the control tower. Once again Studio One features with Horace Andy's 'Just Say Who' and 'Love Of A Woman' with Jammy running the versions and Carly injecting some deejay chat from time to time. This long lasting recording, like the Tubby's, is another valuable treasure discovered.

Tonto Irie, Little Twitch, John Wayne, Peter Metro, Louie Ranking, Nicodemus, Echo Minott, Dirty Harry, Half Pint, Brigadier Jerry, Pompido, Don Angelo, Chakamemus, Junior Reid & Joe Lickshot. Selector – Tupps. By 1985 Jamaica’s number one sound was Lloyd James King Jammys sound system. This tape captures most of his stable of singers and deejays live at his St.Lucia Road H.Q. Tonto Irie and Little Twitch come forward with good lyrics and Echo Minott keeps the crowd rocking. American visitor Louie Ranking states that ‘Ganja Man’ a money man’ whilst Nicodemus sends special request to all Firehouse posse. Brigadier Jerry lifts the crowd with his ‘tour the world’ lyrics over a slowed down ‘Sleng Teng’ riddim. John Wayne’s performance is energetic and future hitmaker Chakademus and singer Half Pint touch down on some classic Studio One rhythms. This session shows the vibes that the Jammys’ posse created down in Waterhouse at the time.

When sound system tapes first began arriving from Jamaica in the late seventies, It wasn't long before reggae people quickly began to grumble about the sound quality, it usually takes a lot for reggae people to grumble about sound quality. Reggae record releases would never win any a prize in a HiFi magazine. The sound system tape was something else though, the very nature of them meant they were copied many times before anyone outside of the sound system business got them. This meant they were usually at the wrong speed or were poor quality sound. Still people rightly love them faults and all.

With the advent of minidiscs and the CDR the sound quality problems associated with sound system tapes could be solved. This incredible set is the first 2 CD set, and features of the course the Mighty King Stur Gav on his tour of the UK. London and Birmingham. On this set which lasts 2 hours and 26 minutes you get the full crew. Billed as the magnificent seven, and are of course - U.Roy, Josey Wales, Charlie Chaplin, Brigadier Jerry,U.Brown, plus singers Johnny Osbourne and Al Campbell. This amazing set is released by Jugglin Machine and is marketed in the UK by Reggae Retro. rretro@clara.net

King Sturgav – Spaldings, Manchester, August 1998.Little Twitch, Papa Biggy, U.Roy, Natty Pablo & Josey Wales. Selector – Inspector Willie. U.Roy’s Sturgav sound travels to the parish of Manchester for this session in Spaldings. Long time selector Inspector Willie has a wicked selection of Morgan Heritage tunes and Alton Ellis dub plates to play. Regular deejays Natty Pablo and Papa Biggy start the vibes flowing. U.Roy himself is in good form, whilst the under recorded Little Twitch is as lyrical as ever. He’s been around for  a long time but has never had the success he deserves. The ‘Colonel’ Josey Wales then joins the dance, linking up with U.roy and ‘Talking’ Twitch to give us another entertaining Sturgav tape.

King Sturgav – Caymanas Golf Club, Kingston, September 1998.U.Roy, Cutty Ranks, Charlie Chaplin, Josey Wales, Brigadier Jerry, Buro Banton, Jim Brown, Echo Minott, Little Twitch, Jah Thomas, Ranking Trevor, Little John & Joe Lickshot. Selector – Inspector Willie. When you hear a King Sturgave session you know you’re going to get strictly conscious music and lyrics. Inspector Willie plays some wicked Lucaino and Cocoa Tea cuts, while seasoned deejays Brigadier Jerry, Charlie Chaplin and the hard working Josey Wales preach reality in the dancehall. Singers Echo Minott and Little John give good performances and DJ veterans Ranking Trevor Jah Thomas and Buro Banton put in a brief, but entaining appearances. Sturgav dances re proving very popular since owner reactivated his set, and this excellent tape is no exception.

King Sturgav – 28th November 1998, Skateland, Kingston. Luciano, Josey Wales, Papa Biggy, Mikey General, Linval Thompson, Junior Cat, Junior Reid. Selectors Danny Dread & Jah Screw. Jingles’ Skateland venue is the host to hard working Sturgav sound. ‘Father’ Josey welcomes the messenger man Luciano and his sparring partner Mikey General. This wicked tape showcases many of Luciano’s hits and he performs live some of the ‘specials’ that Sturgav have been running recently. Newly installed selector Danny Dread, assisted by original selector Jah Screw, keep the music flowing and Josey Wales ads his dj comments to the vocal version. Early 80’s singer Linval Thompson revives some of his dancehall favourites including his popular ‘Train To Zion’. It’s good to hear a singer of Lucaino's calibre giving his all for the grassroots dancehall audience.

King Tubby Hi Fi - East Queen Street, Kingston,

Circa 1974-75

U.Roy - Operator King Tubby.

This rare recording was uncovered recently courtesy of Canada's Dave Brown. It is the second King Tubby tape to surface and this time the quality is better. The difficulty here is pinpointing the exact year of this historic recording. The venue is East Queen Street in Downtown Kingston and King Tubby's mighty sound system is in full control. Dennis Walks perennial l favourite 'Drifter' starts the tape followed by some pounding Tubby versions. The Godfather of all deejays U.Roy, with his quick jive talking takes over on combination four. Next Tubby runs what sounds like an I.Roy dub plate over the 'Satta' riddim, followed by heavy dub to 'Three Blind Mice' with U.Roy stating that the "King's sound leads the way" Selection turns over to Studio One style with a youthful Jacob Miller's 'Love Is A Message' over which the DJ Daddy sends his own musical message. 'Tubby is our name, and music is our game'. Further Studio One cuts by Horace Andy and Nana McLean follow with matching dubs. U.Roy doesn't crowd the versions too much, leaving the Kings pounding dubs to mash up the venue. This tape although only 40 minutes long, is an important jigsaw piece in the history of reggae music.

Metromedia

Metromedia - Tivoli Gardens, Kingston, July 1982.

Peter Metro, Massive Dread, Zuzu, Papa Ritchie,Papa Wayne. Selector: Sky Juice.

Around the turn of the 80's the Metromedia sound was building a good reputation on the dancehall circuit. The main reason for their popularity was probably down to the presence of charismatic deejay Peter Metro. For this dance in Tivoli Gardens in Western Kingston, Sky Juice is at the controls, as he still is today, and it's the 'Unmetered Taxi' riddim which drives Metro's connection lyrics. He's joined by the late Massive Dread, who's bubbling style was a dancehall favourite. Here he flashed his 'National Heroes' lyrics along with hit song. 'This is Massive.' Papa Wayne and Richie, in combination. trade girl lyrics and comment on th1982 Brazilian football team. But it's Peter 'Pedro' Metro was shines brighest here, often chatting and singing 'en espano' at length. As he rightly says 'Jamaica Proud A Me'. Metromedia status continued to grow over the years, and although mainly a juggling sound now, Sky Juice is rated as one of the worlds best selectors.

Ray Symbolic

Ray Symbolic - 82 Chisholm Avenue - Kingston, 1980.

Ranking Joe, Lui Lepki. Selector: Jah Screw.

The deejay/selector combination of Ranking Joe and Jah Screw were at their peak around the late seventies and early eighties. Firstly with the original King SturGav and, as featured here, with the Ray Symbolic sound. Ranking Joe 'steps it in a Chisholm Ave', displaying his trademark quick talking style, as Jah Screw draws musical selections from the likes of Barrington Levy, Horace Andy, and in particular Sugar Minott. Dollars is the topic for his 'Money Man Skank' and he warns about 'Fussing And Fighting' over Sugar's 'Jah Shakey' cut 'Jah Jah Children. Towards the end of this rare tape, frequent dancehall performer Lui Lepki joins the proceeding urging Jah Children to unite. Not long after this session Ray Symobolic, with Screw and Joe become the first Ja sound to tour England in August 1980. The three month stay was a great success, but tragically in November, shortly after the return to Jamaica, the owner Ray Symbolic was killed in a Kingston car crash.

Socialist Roots

Socialist Roots – Angola Lawn, Kingston, 25th May 1978

This classic tape captures the former King Attorney sound shortly after it re-emerged as Socialist Roots. The selector is the veteran Danny Dread and he has here two of Jamaica’s top ranking deejays. Channel One hitmaker and U.Roy disciple Ranking Trevor holds the mic in fine style toasting over some killer rockers riddims. Long-time dancehall entertainer U.Brown steps forward on side two deejaying masterfully over some famous Harry Mudie dubs. Sadly political violence in Kingston forced Socialist Roots to disband before the seventies were through.

Leon ‘Big John’s’ Stereophonic sound was the hom of the talented General Echo. He was the slackest DJ in the world, but he deejayed with unique style and a wicked sense of humour. Here he’s jouned by his spars Django, Skipper and singer Madoo. Danny Dread pleads for tribal unity in a Brigader Jerry style, and Ringo and Welton Irie hit the slackness lyrics. It’s General Echo, as ever who steals the show.

Super Cat, Major Manzie, Buro Banton, Ricky Tuffy, Cutty Ranks, General Jah Mikey, Nicodemus, Junior Black, Selector Danny Dread.

For a long time Kenneth ‘Skengman’ Black had a dream of creating a top sound system in Jamaica. Stur Mars was that sound. He rounded up twp of the islands best selectors in Ainsley Grey from Kilamanjaro and Danny Dread from Studio 54 and some top notch deejays, most of whom are present at this session in Alexandria, St Anns. Danny Dreadlocks flings down plenty of pre-digital riddims, featuring Half Pint, Junior Reid and Frankie Paul in particular. Buro Banton hails up Sturmars as the new sound to rule every sound. Veteran Jah Mikey, yet another fine deejay who’s never made made that big breaktrhough, is, as ever, full of lyrics. Cutty Ranks, rough – house deejay in the making, and Major Manzie handle the mic well. Long talking Super Cat, also fresh from’Jaro’ with plenty to say. Stands proud as a buffalo soldier over a wicked dub of Half Pints ‘Freedom Fighter’. This session was one of a series of warm ups for the official Skateland opening. Even so, Skengman must have been pleased with his heavyweight sound.

Virgo – Up Park Camp, Kingston, 1980

Lone Ranger, General Echo, Sammy Dread, Barrington Levy, Welton Irie, Selector: Tony Virgo

Virgo sound system was very popular around the turn of the 80’s. The Lone Ranger was frequently at the microphone of operator Tony Virgo’s set. For this dance in the Up Park Camp area, Lone Ranger is joined by two of Jamaica’s slackest deejays, the legendary General Echo and Welton Irie. Youthman sensation Barrington Levy steps in the dance with a version of ‘Under Sixteen’ over the ‘Stalag’ rhythm, which prompts General Echo to let loose his ‘Arleen’ lyrics. Studio One riddims feature heavily and popular vocalist Sammy Dread had the people skanking to Papa Virgo. At one point Welton Irie is ordered to get slack by one of his fellow deejays. Hearing Echo and Ranger in combination over The Wailing Souls ‘Old Broom’ Taxi rhyhtm sums up this tape, slack but very entertaining.

Zodiac

Zodiac – Compound Way, Kingston 1982

Brigadier Jerry, Danny Jackson, Danny Dread, Jah Mel,

Selector Jimbo.

Compound Way is the venue for the Zodiac Hi Fi on this night and the star of the show is ‘The General’ Brigadier Jerry, fresh from a Jah Love Muzik tour of England. He’s in top form here showing off his deejaying skills urging the youth to get an education on ‘Gwan A School’ over Sly ‘Unmetered Taxi’. His ‘In The Ghetto’ lyrics are also heard before handing over to singer Danny Jackson for an adapted version of ‘Sharing The Night With Zodiac’ The unhearald deejay Danny Dread is next in line. ‘The Reverend’ has been a long time fixture of the dancehall scene, always chatting his lyrics in conscious fashion. Here he hits out at the proliferation of slackness from many deejay’s. When selector Jimbo moves into a Sugar Minott selection, first Danny Jackson versions ‘Gonna Take A Miracle’ over ‘Rough Ole Life’ before Briggy moves in to finish this excellent tape with a swipe at chaaty mouth people and a rundown of the bad boy’s guns.
