KOREAN WAR STATISTICS
Cost of the Korean War to the United States is estimated to have been $83 billion. It despatched over 5.7 million men to the theatre of whom 33,629 were killed in action and over 20,000 in non-combat accidents. 103,284 were wounded in action and over 5,000 posted as missing or prisoners.
British Army - about 40,000 soldiers in total served in Korea - 15,000 at any one time. 1,078 were killed in action and 2,674 wounded and 1,060 missing or prisoners.
British Navy - 17,000 incl Marines & Auxiliary Fleet - 7,000 at any one time.
South Koreans - Had 600,000 men under arms by the end of the war - suffered 300,000 casualties over 46,000 killed in action.. It is estimated that about 2 million civilians were killed.
Chinese - had 850,000 men in the front line (a total of about 1,200,000 served in Korea. Estimated that over 401,000 Chinese were killed in action, 486,995 wounded and 21,211 taken prisoner.
North Koreans - 214,899 killed, 303,685 wounded and 101,680 missing or captured.
Number of Communist prisoners - 132,000 (only 70,000 were willing to return)
UN Artillery - fired an average of 24,000 shells a day (In June 53 fired 2,700,000 shells (105mm or above) - more shells fired in Korea than in the whole of World War 2. In June 1953 the UN artillery fired the largest single month’s shells of 105mm or above : 2,700,000. (The Chinese fired 45,000 shells in one day.)
UN Air Forces - dropped 386,000 tons of bombs - 33,000 tons of napalm - 314,000 rockets fired - 167 million machine gun rounds were fired.
1,500 enemy aircraft were claimed destroyed (including 808 MIGs)
Total military & civilian casualties on both sides are estimated to be in the region of 4.5 million. Estimated that over 2 million civilians perished in North Korea (20% of the total population)
51% of allied prisoners died in captivity.
