Back to the Sun Back to the Spacepod
The monocular fitted into the enlarged pinhole.

Improvements to the Pinhole Camera

To get a better image from my camera, and to get a steadier relationship between my monocular and a screen, I combined both projection methods. I have a very small, pocket-sized monocular (that's half a binocular) that I could tape into an enlarged hole in the foil and secure on the inside of the box with tape and cardboard.
The monocular fitting seen from inside the box. You can see how the box provides a nice shady dark space for viewing the screen inside, while the monocular is held firmly pointing in towards the screen.

Again, I cannot stress how important it is that you never look through an optical instrument at the Sun. Even if you just get your hand in the way of this arrangement, you can get burnt. So be very careful.

Bigger image of the Sun with the monocular This picture is to the same scale as the pinhole Sun picture and you can see that the image is much larger. With more powerful binoculars or a larger box you can get a bigger image again. Come back later as I hope to get pictures of the Venus transit by this method on June 8th.
