When I first started browsing the Internet I found that there were many ‘Speedex’ sites this being a type of American tractor or grass cutter, camera or fishing reel!! Trying to narrow the search using ‘Austin’ only cut that down to the sites in Austin Texas!
I have found the following sites have something about these specials, click on the hyperlinks to go straight to them.
· A good site with a lot of SPEEDEX history and information particularly about the Ford based Sirocco. Many other A7 and Ford specials covered.
· A Marcos site with early Jem Marsh and SPEEDEX history. Interesting photo of an early curved tail 750 VJ 9343 from an early SPEEDEX advert. ·
· A site devoted to one of Jem Marsh’s early pre Speedex specials—the Grayford. It’s possible to see the lines that eventually were developed into the Speedex 750.
· Has a section on the Speedex Spree Kart with a couple of pages of the sales brochure, and advert and a picture of a Spree Kart. |

Other sites worth a look include:
· Good Austin 7 information with lots of the usual A7 trivia that is so absorbing
· Still the site with the most A7 information even though it hasn’t been live since 2003.
· Lots of old car information data, contacts, etc, etc.
· Sub page devoted to Austin 7’s, sub section relating to Austin 7 myths explaining how some of them are not true or how they have been overcome. Has a Speedex/Marcos leaflet and the story of the development of the first Marcos whilst still connected with Speedex.
· A bookshop dedicated to old motors, with new and second hand books, magazines, club bulletins as well as technical manuals. Mailing service or drop in if you’re in Yorkshire.
· An interesting site on our favourite subject! A lot of photo’s and content, it takes a while to down load but worth the wait. An interesting quiz to identify unusual A7 items (spot the SPEEDEX part!!).
· Formally the Austin Seven Clubs Association site, Barry Lovelock has set up as his own. An expansive site with many interesting features. The photo’s of the Ulster TT race are something I hadn’t seen before. Where do these old photo’s etc keep coming from—and how much similar material has been lost over the years?
Austin Seven Clubs Association
· A comprehensive site, the chassis register makes interesting reading with a cross reference to registrations.
· A site similar to this one but covering Speedex’s rivals who made the Super specials and Supaloy components
· Speedex bodies were sold through agents as well as direct from Luton. Monkspath were an agent in Birmingham. Elsewhere on this website Colin Usher described how he built a Speedex 750 BOA 225 in the ‘60’s. He bought the body and parts from Monkspath Garage. The site mentions Speedex but it is most famous for its connections with the Swallow Dorreti.
· Still the leading A7 club with all the history and background. The Beaulieu weekend has lots of Auto jumble and the biggest gathering of A7’s of all types and ages. |
