Upon Exeter's return to the National League in 1985, Mike played a more prominent role and appeared in 39 matches for an average of 6.27, whilst in 1986 he averaged 5.04 from 39 meetings and 5.09 from 26 in 1987.
For the next eight years, Michael moved around gaining valuable experience and was picked for England against sweden in 1994 whilst he was a Belle Vue rider, the meeting being held at Exeter. Whilst named as a reserve, he went on to score 10 points as England thrashed sweden 70-38.
After years of long distance travelling, and following a relatively bad season at Oxford in the 1995 season ,he was delighted to return home and become a permanent fixture at the County Ground.
The 1996 season staged the single League that enabled Michael to ride alongside riders like Mark Loram and Simon Wigg and gain even more valuable experience. In that season he was to average 6.52 from 42 meetings for Exeter and so began his long relationship with the County Ground.
The 1997 season saw the formation of the Elite and Premier Leagues with Exeter opting to join the Premier, Mike became Captain and led the Falcons in winning the Young Shield with his average jumped to 8.83 from 42 matches.
In 1998 he averaged 8.38 from 36 matches, and in 1999 it jumped again to 9.36 from 42. It was On Saturday, 12th June 1999 in a Cup match at Workington, that Mike notched up his 258th appearance for Exeter which eqaulled Don Hardy's long standing record as well as becoming Exeter's highest ever points scorer.
By the end of 2000 he averaged 9.26 from 54 meetings by which time he had recorded 334 appearances and scored 2,949 points, and Exeter had won the Premier league Title. In 2001 he averaged 9.19 from 49 meetings. Despite the loss of main sponsor and a wrist injury early on in the 2002 season, Mike still topped the Falcons with an 8.34 average from his 40 meetings.
He missed the latter part of the 2003 season through neck injuries sustained at the I.O.W in a K.O Cup fixture on June 24th and from 23 meetings he averaged 8.48. Whilst recieving treatment for his injuries, it was found that Mike had been riding for about 3 seasons with a broken neck. He had a well deserved 20 year testimonial in 2003, an event that was won by Leigh Adams with Mike unfortunately unable to compete.
His comeback after his injuries, together with sponsorship difficulties, saw Mike's average dip during 2004 to 7.14, and at one point wore the No 7 reserve vest. However, it came as a big suprise when Mike's long service came to an end when he was not included in Exeter's plans for 2005, the final year at the County Ground and he was to move to Newport having made 496 appearances as a Falcon.
