Really sorry to see the Falcons dispand in 2005, it just dosn't seem right that the County Ground is no more.
Had some great years watching Exeter and even travelled as far as Berwick to watch the boys in there Knock out quest, hope we can get fixed up for 2007.
Thanks to all the riders and officials who gave me so much enjoyment over the years.

As an avid speedway fan, and have been for many years, I was shocked and saddened at the closure and demolition of the County Ground at Exeter speedway.
With the introduction of Sky Sports to the speeedway world, how on earth can this be allowed to happen????? Do we have to see the demise of our beloved sport on this level and just take it laying down???? It is a disgrace to our sport that this has happened,And i feel so sad for the people who worked so long and hard at Exeter to make it so enjoyable for the fans just to see it vanish just like that
Is there any news of another venue??? - I live in Torquay and Exeter is (or was) my HOME track. Now Weymouth has gone as well I gues we just have to sit and watch it on T.V BUT it just is NOT the same You cannot get the atmosphere watching it on T.V Am disgusted Annoyed and very, very sad.
THANK YOU EXETER FOR GIVING US SO MANY YEARS OF TRUE SPEEDWAY THRILLS

As a youngster I remember my father taking me to Exwick playing fields where a demonstration of speedway was being held. This was as one entered the playing fields beside the "Thatched House" pub and I remember several riders showing their paces. As far as I can remember this was before speedway came to the County Ground again after the war and perhaps was a taster to see how much interest there was in the sport. I also recall the Friday evening cycle-speedway meetings behind Merrivale Road in St Thomas.
We lived near Cyril Roger and I got to know quite a number of the Falcon's team. Happy memories of Bronco Slade, Don Hardy, Les Trim etc.
Sorry to hear the County Ground has now lost it's Falcons!

So sad to see the end of The County Ground, I first saw speedway racing there in 1961, it would have been a meeting of old rivals The Falcons v The Plymouth Devils, or maybe one of those Bank Holiday Monday morning meetings with The Poole Pirates.
Although I'm an exiled Plymothian, the Falcons always have a special place in my speedway affections, I can remember some fantastic meetings at Hackney and Wimbledon, when " 1,3,5,7, hear this roar from glorious Devon" could be heard on the terraces from the travelling fans. Ivan Mauger up to his tricks again at Plough Lane, Chris Julian winning heat 13 and the match at Hackney, even with Ivan not turning up (again).
As far as I can work out, my dad, Alan Briggs had rides at Exeter in the 30's using the name Francis Drake, a suitable psuedonym for a Plymothian, whose parents would not allow their son to race motorcycles. I have Exeter programmes from the 30's with Francis Drake listed in novice races, Dad never said too much about his exploits but I have a strong feeling that this was my Dad.
I'm glad that I was able to see 2 meetings in 2005, The Junior Westernapolis and the league match v Reading. Dissapointed that Seemond was injured, I saw him racing indoor schoolboy "speedway"/ moto x in Cornwall must have been 20 odd years ago, I still have the programme. My last two visits to the County Ground were very enjoyable, well worth the journey from London. My brother Tim was at the final meeting representing the Briggs of Plymouth family.... here's to the future, hopefully a quick return to the track, and with new rumours emanating from Plymouth of a new track in the city, maybe even a new era of Devon Derbies.
David Briggs.

I've been a falcons fan since 2003, my favorite pairing that year were Lee Smethills and Krister Marsh. Nowadays my favorite rider From 2004+2005, and will ever be my favourite rider is Mark Lemon. Lemo is the very best when it comes to ride at Exeter I remember his first home meeting aganist Newport in 2004 his was simply the Best and i hope to see him ride again in Falcons colors when Exeter get the new staduim.

Was taken to the County Ground as a babe in arms, 1950, Jack Geran was an all time favourite, what a lovely man, I saw him in Exeter recently and he still remembered me by name. Was sad to see that Alan Cowland had passed away this year, he too was my hero when I was a teenager,he would always have time to come and chat to my mum and I after a meeting. Great website and wonderful amounts of information, certainly brought back lots of memories to me, the names just roll off the tongue.Thank you.

My Dad rode for Exeter Falcons from 1929 and I believe that he helped build the course in 1928. His name was Richard Buggie Fleeman and his name is included in the list of Exeter Riders in 1929. We brought my Dad to a Meeting at Exeter in about 1987 and he received an ovation from the crowd that night, something that brought tears our eyes. Sadly my Dad passed away in 1995. He had very fond memories of his racing days, we enjoy your Web Site and hope that it will lead to further information about the early years at Exeter.

I FIRST WENT TO SEE THE EXETER FALCONS WITH MY DAD IN 1949, I WAS A REGULAR SUPPORTER UNTIL I MOVED TO BARNSTAPLE IN 1966 WHEN MY SON WAS BORN IN 1967. I HAD MISSED 4 YEARS, THEN I STARTED TAKING MY SON AT THE AGE OF 4 YEARS, WE HAVE BEEN REGULARS EVER SINCE. WE ATTENED THE END OF AN ERA MEETING ON MONDAY 10TH OCTOBER 2005 TO SEE OUR IDOLES IVAN MAUGER, SCOTT AUTREY & VACLAV VERNER IN ATTENDANCE WAS BRILLIENT.
WE CAN ONLY WISH THE MANAGMENT ALL THE LUCK IN THE WORLD IN FINDING A NEW HOME FOR THE FALCONS

Great to see Cyril Roger on the site. He served Speedway for many years Although a trifle controversial at times he was a popular Star at Norwich. Richard Green was always worth the admission money with his all action style, another sadly injured and out of the Sport too young. All things considered this is a great site and I will return on many occasions I am sure.

I was just checking for info on Jack Hart 52 - 54 and gave your site a look over. What a wonderful historic document has been put together, like i say, I was checking on Jack but I ended up spending about three hours reading stuff that had no bearing on my research of NZ riders but which I found totally absorbing. Brilliant effort!

Fantastic site. I am a Falcons follower from Grays, Essex, so obviously I don't get to see too much now, but very proud to have followed the Falcons in the heyday of the early- mid seventies home and away.

I spent a lot of time with the Falcons in 1982 on away trips and it was great to hear from Janette about Keith Millard again. I was at Somerset last Friday, pity only half the Falcons turned up, and we were only saying how much we needed a rider in the Keith Millard mode. He was an absolute sensation in 1982. Where is he now and what is he doing?
Regards Allen

An Absolutley facinating website not only into the history of Exeter speedway, but just speedway in general! I think this is possibly the only place where you can track your team every year since they started for where they finished in the league. Found out Berwick only ever finished bottom of the league once! super read

I was born and brought up in Regent Street just around the corner from the County Ground. Even as a toddler I could hear and smell the falcons! I started going to matches in 1961 and was a regular from 1962 until 1969 when I went away to college. I fondly remember those days, trips to Belle Vue, Long Eaton, Poole and Rayleigh as well as many Monday nights cheering on the Falcons...a great trip down memory lane.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I was a Falcons fan from the late 1940s to about 1974 when I came to Canada. Great bios on so many riders, the only two I missed being "Dingo" Davey and Frankie Johnson. Dingo rode only "second halfs" and I don't think he ever made the team proper. As for Frankie he was a total maniac who came to us during the early 60s injury spate that decimated the taem. Perhaps he was only on loan so doesn't qualify for a mention. Anyway great site and I'll be back again and again. By the way any "old farts" reading this who want to e-mail me I'd love to hear from you.

I am a friend of Arthur Pilgrim who was a speedway rider in the late 40's early 50's, and am trying to find out if there is any old team members who could contact me on behalf of Arthur, or have any pics of the team or him that they could e-mail to me or maybe someone would like to find out some information from Arthur of his speedway days.

As a 14 yr old schoolboy I attended every home meeting of the Hastings Saxons in 1948/49 and can remember the visits of Exeter with the Roger brothers. I have a picture in my den of Bert Roger and Wally Green (Hastings Saxons) with Wally's arm round Bert's shoulders. In fact the photo of Bert Roger on your Riders database is that very photo. From 1969 until I emigrated I supported the Eastbourne Eagles.
An excellent website with much interesting information. Keep up the good work, it is much appreciated.

What a great site for a lifelong fan of Speedway to stumble upon. I grew up in Southern California and was a fan in the "old" heyday from 1969 to 1977 when I moved to Oregon. My father was a speedway fan in the 1940's and '50's living in Los Angeles. Thank you all for documenting and making available such valuable history.
