Bob joined Exeter in 1971 in a swap deal that saw Martin Ashby move to Swindon, and Bob to the County Ground, having been at Swindon for six years prior to his move.

Was soon a favourite with the fans and earned a reputation for his extremely fast gating techniques. Capped many times at International level, Bob also became the first rider to break the 70 second barrier at Exeter when he clocked a time of 69.2 secs, thus writing his name in the Guiness book of Records as Speedways fastest ever.

His average in that first year was 8.87 from 33 meetings, whilst in 1972 it jumped up to 9.89 from 33 meetings. Left early in the 1973 season in another swap deal, that brought Tony Lomas to Exeter. Rode just six matches and was averaging 7.56 before his departure to Oxford.

Bob eventually returned to ride for Swindon and later moved to Poole. It was whilst at Poole in 1980 that Bob retired from Speedway, although he did attempt a comeback in 1983, again with Swindon but it was a short lived comeback.
