Back home, Steve had first started out riding at the ripe old age of fourteen, and was the North Queensland solo champion for five consecutive seasons and was to win several caps for his country, including the 1974-75 test series against the British Lions.
In 1977, Steve averaged 6.33 from 25 matches, whilst the following 1978 season, he won the N.League riders Championship which prompted him to ride full time for Exeter. During that same season he had averaged 6.08 from 30 for Exeter, whilst in 1979 it was 6.17 from 39.
He remained at Exeter until 1980 when the Falcons dropped down to N.L racing and he moved to Swindon along with Scott Autrey.
