WAHLMANN, LEIF - 1984
The nineteen year old Swede had come to Exeter on loan from Poole in 1984, where he had failed to impress, and was beginning to establish himself as a bright prospect at Exeter when tradgedy struck. Leif was riding in the European Junior championship at King's Lynn, when in heat 13, his engine was to seize and Leif suffered severe head and chest injuries in the resulting accident. He was rushed to hospital but never regained consciouness. Up until then he had appeared in 10 matches for Exeter and averaged 5.29.
WALSH, KEN - 1950, 1951
Australian Ken had been spotted by Cyril Roger who happened to be on tour down under and after cosideration Ken opted for Exeter. Made his debut away to Leicester but failed to score and failed to score the next night at Oxford. However, once he had settled in Ken started to score well and even set a new track record of 74.2 seconds late into 1950. Before 1951 got underway, Ken was badly injured riding for a Devon Select side at Plymouth and was out for several weeks, but on his returm his form just got better. Such was his improvement that he left at the end of the 1951 to join First Division Harringay
WATTS, BOB - 1977/78/79/80
Born on the 2nd July,1951 in Minehead, Somerset, Bob first rode for Exeter in 1977 appearing in 3 matches and making his debut for Exeter on June 27th against Wolverhampton. Towards the end of 77 he was loaned out to Canterbury In 78 he appeared in another 2 matches and from from his 5 rides this time around, he scored 4, plus 2 bonus points. Had Six matches in 1979, his CMA at this point was 2.15 and was to ride two matches in 1980 but failed to score and was dropped, later to be transferred.
WEBSTER, ALF - 1954, 1955
Born August 29th, 1925, Alf joined Exeter from Liverpool making his debut on the 20th May 1954,scoring 3 points away to Plymouth. Was to make the reserve spot his own until August when he was broke and dislocated his wrist that finished his season. Was back for the start of the 1955 season, and after some good early scores, Alf settled back down to his reserve berth. When Exeter closed at the end of 1955, Alf switched to Harringay.
WICKETT, RAY - 1964
Born in Stratton, Cornwall on January, 19th, 1938, Ray joined Exeter from St Austell and was seen as a good choice for reserve. But after only 17 meetings he was involved in a spill and broke his wrist which was to keep him out for the remainder of the 1964 season, just as he was emerging as a very useful second string. From those 17 meetings Ray had scored 69 points and he appeared just once in 1965 averaging 2.0, and also had spells at Bradford and Belle Vue.
WIGG, SIMON - 1996
Born October 15th 1960 in Aylesbury, Bucks, Simon was signed at the last minute for the 1996 season and was something of a gamble due to clashes with other commitments. Took a while to settle, and for a while his other commitments put his future with the club in some doubt. But as his confidence grew, so did the big scores and his undoubted charisma paid dividends to both club and the fans who loved him. Ended the season on 8.83 from 30 meetings for Exeter. A long illness in later years ended tragically with his death in 2000.
WILLIAMS, JOHN - 1980, 1981
Born 29th December, 1957 in Gloucester, John was signed from Ellsmere in a £2,500 deal and was seen as a replacement for Arnie Haley who had been dropped. Appeared in 15 matches during 1980 to average 6.26. Was ever present in 1981 and topped the 200 points mark for the first time in his career to average 6.13 from 36 as well as winning the coverted "Westernapolis" trophy at the County Ground beating former stars Scott Autrey and Vaclav Verner, also in 1981. Decided to retire at the end of 1981 to concentrate on a motorcycle repair business, though he did ride one match in 1982 to help out.
WILMOTT, SEAN - 1984
Born 23rd June, 1961 in Bristol, Sean was brought into the side in a bid to strengthen the line up on Exeter's return to the British League in 1984, and after a quiet start he was soon picking up valuable points for the "Falcons" and was to end the season on a 6.01 average from his 42 outings. Upon Exeter's drop back into the National League, Sean moved to Halifax for the 1985 season whilst in 1986 he was at Bradford.
WOODCOCK, PHIL - 1967/68/69/70/71/72.
Phil started out as an Exeter junior in 1967 before making 6 appearances for the Falcons in 1968 and averaged 5.32. In 1969 he had appeared 24 meetings for a 4.27 average and in 1970 it waS 4.62 from 31 matches. he had been bought outright from Romford for the 1971 season and was to appear in 34 meetings to average 4.42. Only made 14 matches in 1972 for an average of 4 and was to move away from Exeter on the arrival of Kevin Holden.
WRIGHT, KEITH - 1981, 1982
Born on the 4th April, 1959 in Christchurch, Dorset, Keith joined Exeter for the 1981 season, but his season was hampered when he broke his leg in July. Up until that time, he had appeared in 13 matches for the Falcons and averaged 6.00. In the 1982 season he stayed clear of injuries but found points hard to come by abd finished on an average 4.67 from 32 meetings. He was in fact Australian, his family taking John to Australia when he was only four.
