The second of the Czech brothers who rode for Exeter, Vaclav was born on May 6th, 1949 in Prague and it had taken almost three years of negotiations to complete the signing that was to bring him to Exeter.

Vaclav had first appeared in Britain back in 1968 at the age of 18 with the Czech touring side and had ridden alongside his brother, not Jan, but another brother named Miroslav.

At the time of his signing, Vaclav was ranked number 2 in his country and had reached the Contintental Final of the World championship, had been a World Ice finalist in 1970, 1971 and 1973, as well as qualifying for the World 1,000 metre sand track final in 1975. he had also and partnered Pavel Mares to fourth place in the 1971 World Pairs Final

Joined Exeter in 1977 making his debut in a S.Star KO cup match at Swindon and was soon thrilling the crowd with his cavalier style of riding, usually from the back. By the end of the season he had scored seven home maximums. Rode in 30 matches for Exeter in his debut season and finished on a high 8.6 average.

His form continued through 1978 when he had appeared in 43 matches for Exeter and finsished on an average of 8.35 whilst it was much the same in 1979 when he had appeared in 35 meetings and ended on an 8.47 average. Was also a former track record holder when he clocked 67.2 in April, 1979

Later moved on to Poole when Exeter switched to National League racing in 1980 before embarking on long grass track career. It was near the close of the 1993 season that the veteran was to make an astonishing return to the County Ground to help a depleted Exeter line up and after a fight to get him a work permit, he was to be included in the plans for the 1994 campaign.

it was something of a suprise, not only because he was a young 45 years old, but he had also recieved serious injuries that year whilst racing in Holland. True, he only appeared 8 times for Exeter averaging 4.59 but was seen as a great influence to a somewhat dejected Exeter line up.

Returned in 1994 and returned an average of 6.44 during the season. Missed the month of June through concussion and back injuries and was also out with a shoulder injury towards the end of the season. Vaclav's comeback ended at the County ground (April 17th 1995)during an Easter trophy meeting when he was involved in a spill which left him a fractured left femur and knee and a broken shoulder.
