Tavistock Square

Tavistock Square is a few minutes walk either from Euston Station or from Russell Square.

The central statue of Gandhi, informal, seated in typical fashion, is a good modern figure dating, it seems, from 1953. A tiny plaque in front encourages the viewer to bend in apparent homage. In one corner of the square is a monument to Dame Louisa Aldrich-Blake, consisting of a bronze double bust half-figure and a plinth above a corner seating arrangement, dated 1925. The sculptor was A. G. Walker, and the memorial was designed by Sir Edward Lutyens. The time to visit this Square is lunchtime during the week, when it fills with students and office workers and has a picnic atmosphere.
